Saturday 1st September offered the eight Nordic Folkboats that started the RLymYC Saturday Series Race a day of highs, lows and unusual challenges.
A port end biased start line enticed Padfoot into trying an over-ambitious port tack flyer, fouling Mistral and forcing a penalty turn to exonerate themselves.
The breeze had a lot of South in it allowing a lee bow in the last of a flood tide across to the first mark at Black Rock by Yarmouth. However several boats misjudged the turning tide and dramatically overstood the fist mark except Chris Baldwick on Bonnie who judged the situation perfectly, rounding just behind Julian and Clare Sowrey's Mistral with Crackerjack rounding third.
This set the scene for the rest of the race crossing back and forth across the Solent in a changing tide and reaching along the mainland shore.
The race officer chose the rare option of finishing at the R.Lym YC line giving the fleet a long, snaking and light run up the Lymington River to the finish after the jousting in the Solent.
A tricky day showing the skill of Mistral and Bonnie and providing a bit of frustration for the rest of the fleet. However a nicer day to start September could not have been wished for.
At the finish, Mistral was ahead of Bonnie, while Crakerjack finished third.
