Points & PC Solutions Series at Perth Sailing Club

by Bob Watson 30 Jul 2018 20:11 BST 22-29 July 2018

On Sunday 22nd July day two of the PC Solutions series of races continued. The strong westerly, south westerly wind conditions causing problems for the seven boats taking part in the first race of the day.

Jack Douglas (Solo) made a good start and managed to stay ahead of the Albacore (Dash) helmed by Sandy Rodger and crewed by Robin MacArthur. Both boats pulled ahead of the rest of the fleet from Vicky Wright (Europe) Munro & Molly Gauld in the RS Quest, and Hunter Williamson (Solo). Jack Douglas took the flag just ahead of the Albacore of Sandy & Robin with Hunter in third place. Jack Douglas (Solo) made a clean start and again led throughout from start to finish. There was a close tussle between Hunter Williamson (Solo), Sandy & Robin in the Albacore and Bob Watson and Jim Galloway in the Enterprise for second, third and fourth place. The Enterprise ran into the bank at the bottom mark and Bob & Jim lost time getting back into the race. It was Jack (Solo) crossing the line first followed by Sandy & Robin (Albacore) second and the Father and Daughter team Munro & Molly in third.

The wind conditions remained strong for the second race of the day. Jack Douglas made a string start in his Solo with only some ten seconds separating the following three boats of Hunter Williamson (Whoof), Sandy Rodger & Robin MacArthur (Dash) and Bob & Jim (Aeolian). The Blue Mirror crewed by Gillie Amatt and Cadet Kyle Fraser retired after lap one. Vicky Wright (Patch3) retired during the first lap. At the line is was Jack Douglas (Woodpecker) then Sandy and Robin (Dash) and Bob & Jim (Aeolian).

On Saturday and Sunday 28th & 29th July the PC Solutions series of Races continued. The sailors were faced with a 15 knot gusting wind constantly changing direction from west to east and on occasion southerly. Four boats took part in the races. All boats made a clean start, wind dropped on the first leg with Andrew Porteous (Whooper) 1st, Bob Watson and Jim Galloway second and James Curley in the Laser third. Andrew was well in front on the second leg with Bob/Jim swapping positions with James in the laser for third. James capsized but soon recovered. At the line it was Andrew Porteous (Whooper) first, then Bob Watson/Jim Galloway (Aeolian) second with James Curley (Laser) in third. Cadet Orry Graham retired.

The fourth race in the PC Solution Series continued after a short break, Bob & Jim got away to a fast start with James following in the laser and Andrew (Whooper) making up for a late start. Andrew managed to just cross the line in first place closely followed the Enterprise of Bob & Jim with James's laser only a second behind. Orry finished the race in fourth place.

Five boats took part in the last races of the series on Sunday. There was a slight delay to the start as the marker buoys were being deployed and the Tourist Boat Badger required escorting through the fleet. It was Jacob McCauley in the laser who took an early lead followed by Bob and Jim in the Enterprise (Aeolian). Andrew Porteous (Whooper) was close behind the Enterprise and quickly gained a lead on the other boats which he maintained throughout and finished first followed by Bob & Jim and then Cadet Ivan Kossko in the Laser Radial.

In the final races of the series James Curley sailing the Solo (Woodpecker) made an excellent start on the shortened course. He was followed by Bob & Jim (Aeolian) and Andrew Porteous (Whooper). James had water at the second mark but Bob & Jim overtook him on the inside to gain the lead. Close racing over the next two laps with lead changing constantly between the Solos and the single Enterprise. Andrew kept his lead in the dying wind conditions on the third round with Jacob McCauley getting ahead of the Enterprise to cross the line in second place.

Perth Sailing Club wishes to thank PC Solutions of Perth for their sponsorship of the Series.
