The World Sailing Show - August 2018

by Sunset+Vine 23 Jul 2018 15:42 BST 23 July 2018

Conservative estimates put the total value of this year's Superyacht Cup fleet in Palma at well over 500 million Euros. Yet whatever the figure, the sight of some of the world's biggest and best racing in Palma Majorca was spectacular.

Meanwhile, in the closest match in the history of the Volvo Ocean Race, three boats on equal points put everything on the line to battle for overall victory.

In Zadar, Croatia the competition was just as close in the second event of the 52 Super Series, as was the action in the offshore stage of the Rolex Giraglia.

And there's more: Extremes in Cascais, the Golden Globe in Les Sables d'Olonne, plus during the build up to the Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, we take a look at how one Olympic sailor is balancing her campaign with a new family life.

Superyacht Cup 2018 – The biggest and the best

The Superyacht Cup in Palma, Majorca is big. Conservative estimates put the total value of this year's fleet at well over 500 million Euros. It is the longest running event of its kind in Europe and draws the world's most experienced and accomplished crews. This year the curtain was raised with a bonus day as the two J Class yachts, Velsheda and Svea went head to head in two match races.

Extreme Sailing Series – Act 4 Cascais

Act 4 of the Extreme Sailing Series took place in Cascais, Portugal where one team dominated the racing.

Golden Globe Start

After years of preparation and planning the day had finally come for 17 amateur skippers to set out from les Sables d'Olonne on the west coast of France. Their goal, to celebrate the first ever non stop, single handed race around the world by participating in the 50th anniversary of the race.

Volvo Ocean Race – The final battle

Ultimate victory in the 43,000 mile race around the world had come down to the last 970 mile leg from Gothenburg in Sweden to the finish at The Hague in the Netherlands. The three leading boats were on equal points, it couldn't be tighter. Except, as the final leg played out the drama ramped up even further. An incredible battle became an incredible finish.

52 Super Series second round Zadar

The opening event of the 52 Super Series had suggested that this season was going to be fiercely fought. The second event in Zadar, Croatia underwrote that and more as this high tech, high octane fleet proved just how close the action is from the off. In the eight races at Zadar, six different teams took a win.

Rolex Giraglia – The Mediterranean offshore classic

Well known for its extremes of weather, which one would be in store for this year's Rolex Giraglia and who would come out on top?

Aarhus Sailing World Championships preview Pt3

In 2016 Charline Picon took Gold in Rio. Her career had hit another high as the former World Champion and three time European Champion stamped her authority on the RS:X class.

Yet Picon isn't ready to stop, even though to carry on means balancing a demanding schedule, with a new family life. During the build up to the Hempel Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark we find out how.
