Wildwind Wednesdays at Lymington Town Sailing Club - Race 10

by Rob Martin 27 Jun 2018 15:11 BST 20 June 2018

Race 10 of LTSC's Wildwind Holidays Wednesday Early Points Series was sailed in a chill southerly breeze gusting up to 17 knots. All the fleets started in the river and sailed courses with two laps in the Solent before returning to the finish in the river.

The fast fleet (class 1) completed 2 sausages and was led home by the trimaran of John Levell followed by Ed Reeves in an RS700 and Nigel Walbank in a Musto Skiff who often exchanged places around the course. Meanwhile Kevin Podger and Heather Chipperfield in the RS400 were able to shake off Sean and Jo Ward in the RS500 to take the win on handicap.

The medium fleet double handers (class 2) had a triangle and sausage to complete. They were led out of the river by Richard Russell and Sylvia Weger in a Tasar followed by a gaggle of Merlin Rockets and the 420 of Jamie and Harry George. John Cooper and Becci Wigley overhauled the Tasar and started to extend their lead on the run back to the river but hit a patch of weed causing the rudder to trip and a the boat to capsize. This cleared the way for the win to go to the 420, second to the Tasar and third to Rob Henderson and Alice Markham in the first of the Merlins.

The medium fleet single handers (class 3) sailed the same course as class 2. John Gautier in a contender was soon amongst the class 2 tail enders and powered on to take the win. Behind him Stuart Watson in the Hadron H2 was able to hold off the Aero 9s of Keith Willis and Tom Ehler on the water to take third but second went to the laser of Clive Taylor.

The slow fleet (class 4) were postponed for a short time as the ferry came up the river. Their course was two sausages close to the shore keeping them well away from the stronger Solent tide. Geoff and Jeremy Havers won comfortably in a Feva. The scows had a close race for second and third with second going to Sue Sutherland and Sarah Unsworth and third to John Sims.

As the fleet came ashore a cold sea mist blew in closing down the visibility and causing it to get very cold. The rib crews were relieved to see that everyone was home before this happened.
