Brand-new sailing regatta to run alongside TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show

by Laura Downton 21 Jun 2018 15:31 BST 17-19 September 2018

A brand-new sailing regatta is set to run alongside the UK's biggest boat show, it has been announced this week. TheYachtMarket.com is creating a new three-day sailing event, which will run at the same time as TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show.

TheYachtMarket.com Regatta will run from September 17 to 19 and feature three cups:

  • The City Cup – pitting teams from cities across the UK against one another for victory on the water
  • The Women's Cup – a day dedicated to all-female crews
  • The Property Cup – bringing businesses from the property industry together to race on Southampton Water
The regatta has been created as part of TheYachtMarket.com's bid to get more people out on the water and trying sailing.

Richard W. Roberts, CEO of TheYachtMarket.com, said: "Getting people out onto the water really is a mission close to our hearts at TheYachtMarket.com. We have some of the best waters for racing right on our doorstep here in Southampton and it's such a shame that so many people haven't had a chance to get out on it. That's exactly why we decided to take matters into our own hands and create a brand-new regatta that will let people do just that. We can't wait."

TheYachtMarket.com has teamed up with sporting events firm Rees Leisure to run the event. Rees Leisure is the company behind some of the region's biggest sporting events, including The ABP Southampton Marathon, Winchester Half Marathon and last year's Southampton Sailing Week.

The company's strategic development director, Chris Rees, said: "We're incredibly excited about the launch of the first TheYachtMarket.com Regatta. With such a spotlight on sailing during TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show, it's exactly the right time to get people out on the water and trying their hand at this fun sport."

Other partners include Sunsail, which will provide a fleet of Sunsail Match First 40s, complete with skippers, and British Marine.

Simon Boulding, Sunsail's Events Director, commented: "Sunsail has been a long standing supporter of TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show and to now be involved in the first ever regatta that is set against the backdrop of this spectacular show is very exciting. We look forward to supporting both TheYachtMarket.com Regatta and TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show."

TheYachtMarket.com Regatta also aims to support worthy causes. A percentage of entry fees will be split between Geoff Holt's Wetwheels and Sail 4 Cancer.
