Gilmour and Turner move into medal position at Medemblik Regatta 2018

Australia's top 49er crew, David Gilmour and Joel Turner, have continued their rise up the leaderboard at the Medemblik Regatta in The Netherlands, and are now firmly entrenched in second place with only tonight's medal race to come.

Gilmour and Turner scored their first bullet of the series the previous day and backed up in the final fleet races with 1, 1 and 3 to move seven points ahead of third-placed Argentinian duo Yago Lange and Klaus Lange, and first-placed French team, Lucas Rual and Emile Amoros, who sailed a discard in yesterday's second race.

"Today was yet another very light and tricky day - six knots of wind with choppy water makes hard work getting the boat around the course fast," Turner said.

"But Dave and I have made improvements throughout the week that helped us a lot today. A couple of race wins is always nice, but a shame we threw away so many points early in the regatta.

"Tomorrow is the medal race and we're sitting in second at the moment and, with close points to third and fourth, we have some defending to do. We'll give it a good crack for sure."

Australia's other 49er crew racing at Medemblik, David's brother, Lachy Gilmour, and Ryan Donaldson are 15th overall.
