Charleston, S.C. is the capital of the low country and world-renown for many things. It's charming beauty reigns supreme, highly acclaimed for its warm hospitality, fine dining and shopping. But in particular, since the rise and massive success of Charleston Race Week, it has become one of the most ideal venues for one-design sportboat racing events. In 2018, the Melges 20 will find a sweet southern groove on Charleston Harbor featuring a distinguished list of teams competing for the fleets most coveted trophy of the year - that of U.S. National Champion.

The 2018 Melges 20 U.S. National Championship is hosted by the Carolina Yacht Club, and is deemed Melges World League Event No. 6 in a 16-part worldwide Series.

Teams have traveled from near and far to compete, including some Class cornerstones and new faces. The talent is evenly stacked with Rob Wilber's Cinghiale, Daniel Thielman's Kuai and father and son double effort - Jason Michas on Midnight Blue and Alexis Michas' Midnight Sun. Reigning World Champion Drew Freides' Pacific Yankee will for sure be in the mix of tough competition.

The Melges 20 Class is thrilled to welcome back the magnificent Rhonda Joyce on Grinning Streak, the one and only entry from the grand land of Canada. Back on the track we'll see Wes Whitmyer's Slingshot, John Brown's Blind Squirrel, Paul Reilly's Red Sky Sailing Team, Russ Lucas' Shimmer, Jim Wilson's Oleander and Bob Moran's Bobsled.

In hopes of proving the value of local knowledge, all eyes and bets are on Carolina Yacht Club favorite and long time Melges Performance Sailboats owner/helmsman Guy Mossman with X.

Learn to love sailing in heavy air
