Eight Nordic Folkboats competed in the fourth race of the Royal Lymington Saturday Series.
A very light south-westly breeze made course setting challenging for the Race Officer, although he was helped by a fading ebb tide which would change some 40 minutes after the start. He wisely kept the fleet close to the starting platform, sending them no further than Dunford as a first beat, bringing the boats back to Folkboat UK as a downwind mark. Madelaine and Mistral got away cleanly at the start heading out to the fair tide in the deeper water. They judged the port tack layline well into Dunford and were first round followed by Bonnie.
The run down the mainland shore was slow, and the tide had begun to flood by the time Folkboats UK was reached.
The next mark was Colten and the leading boats headed out again on starboard looking for the last of the ebb tide. The back markers chose to tack up the mainland seeking less foul tide in the shallower water, which proved the better option. The building flood tide and light wind made rounding Colten to starboard a tricky manoeuvre. Madelaine, Mistral and The Otter all rounded cleanly, but the tide got the better of the next three yachts enabling Samphire and Lady Linda to just get round ahead of them, before ghosting back to the line where the race was shortened. Madelaine won convincingly, followed by Mistral and The Otter.
Five Nordic Folkboats finished with three retiring.
