O'Neill Sea Odyssey reaches a milestone this summer. With the ongoing support of Davis Instruments, it will educate its 100,000th student. The manufacturer donates Hand Bearing Compasses to help teach students the basic mathematics of navigation, along with the curriculum's emphasis on marine science and ecology, and STEM-related topics.

"Our students have benefited from Davis Instruments' gift of hand-held compasses, learning navigation, geometry and algebra concepts, and points at which they collect data while at sea," said Dan Haifley, O'Neill Sea Odyssey executive director. A June 24 celebration is planned to mark the enrollment achievement and honour the legacy of Jack O'Neill.

Santa Cruz, California, USA-based O'Neill Sea Odyssey was founded by wetsuit innovator Jack O'Neill in 1996. In the classroom and aboard its 65' catamaran, the nonprofit organization teaches 4th to 6th grade students firsthand the wonders of the marine environment, the importance of preserving it and how to navigate through it—without any cost to parents. Its website is www.oneillseaodyssey.org.

Held at arm's length, Davis Instruments' Hand Bearing Compass provides precise bearings by simply aligning the front and rear sights, and reading the direction on the liquid-dampened 5 degrees compass card. With two or more LOP sightings, a position is easily plotted on a chart using parallel rules. Illuminated, it can be used at night and is ideal for navigating, predicting a collision course or checking for anchor drift.
