The 49 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar promises to be one of the most contested in the history of the regatta with the high number of experienced teams that will race against the young squads battling for gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

421 boats with over 500 sailors from 49 nations have already made their entry at less than a month and a half for the start of the event co-organised by Club Nàutic S'Arenal, Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa and Real Club Náutico de Palma.

This edition will be marked by the large Laser Radial and Standard fleets with entry numbers well over the other classes. In 2016, a record year in number of entries at the Sofía Iberostar, both classes registered 231 boats and this year, 211 entries – men and women – have already been received.

This high number of entries have forced the Organising Committee to relocate the Nacra 17 class to Club Nàutic s'Arenal, together with the 49er, FX, 470s and Finn. This will give more space for the significant Laser fleet at Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa, also the venue for the RS:X.

The Sofia Iberostar gathers together, year after year, the best European sailors and also attracts teams from all around the World. At this moment, the most important Olympic classes' event in Spain has 49 nations registered. The participation of nations such as China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand is highlighted due to their geographical distance and the complexity in travel and equipment shipment logistics.

The regatta will be held from 30th March to 7th April with racing scheduled from 2nd to 7th April with the Medal Race on Saturday to decide the winners among the top classified sailors. Organised by Club Nàutic S'Arenal, Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa, Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Baleares and Spanish Sailing Federations, the 49 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar is sponsored by Iberostar and has the support of collaborators Trasmediterranea, Marine Pool and Europcar, besides the Govern de les Illes Balears through the Balears Tourism, Palma and Llucmajor city councils.
