Medway RC Laser Winter Series - Day 5

by Sarah Mason 31 Jan 2018 09:22 GMT 28 January 2018

In the absence of our Class Captain, who was ensconced in an RYA Race Officers' course, where incidentally his performance was exceptional, scoring well over 90%, we were still blessed to have Fiona as Race Officer, supported by MYC's Vice Commodore, who soon set to work rowing and mark laying, upon arrival. Two oars fully functioning at this point!

The Southerly wind was in place, at around 15 knots. Debate about rig appropriateness soon took place, with a mix of B and Cs going out for the first few races.

We were joined by a new member, Phil Walker, who soon discovered an absent mast, which caused a return trip home, with Phil rejoining us several races in, but with technique issues persisting. We are looking forward to Phil joining us soon, but with a smaller carbon footprint!

After Race 1, it soon became apparent that conditions favoured C rigs, with Brian Levy gaining an early lead, with a first in Race 2. With a slight change in wind direction to the south-east, our honourary judge, Robert Owens, tweaked the course. Two oars still functioning!

Technique issues were the order of the day for Richard, Les, Phil, Charles, Scott and myself, causing ever decreasing participants. Post coffee, the wind increased with an all round rig change to D. Robert attempted a further course tweak, but a broken oar, hampered this!

In summary, Ian Foxwell took on a decisive winning mode, ahead of Tony Owens. We look forward to seeing you all this Sunday, with Jamie and Fiona practicing in the warmer waters of the Caribbean!

Course allows boats to be closer than normal and with more possible infringements The Race Team using the wind direction of SE and 8 knots speed set a narrow course with a wing mark to form the triangle for the triangle sausage format. This effectively gave two downwind legs, a reach along the leeward end of the course and two beats. Posted on 27 Feb
