With three races planned for the day and a reasonable forecast of a chilly day with a light but increasing breeze, over sixty hopeful sailors turned up for day three of this nine-week series.
This is not called the Frostbite Series for nothing – it was cold and with everything from cold drizzle to full-blown snow forecast for later in the afternoon, the intention was to run three reasonably short back-to-back races with as fast a turnaround as possible, so people didn't freeze while waiting for the next start.
In the first race, some of the fleets were a bit too eager to get racing underway quickly, with two fleets being general recalled and starting under a black flag and having to go to the back of the queue. Not the best day to have to wait for a restart as the snow started to fall.
As ever an over-optimistic number of laps was set only to be shortened as the promised 10 kn breeze was reluctant to fill in at full strength. The 'as briefed' substantial left-hand wind shift didn't happen until the third race and, after a rapid reset of the windward marks and start line, the racing got underway while there still some very cold sailors out on the water.
A well done to all who completed three races and the suggestion from the committee boat, as the last race was shortened, that it was time to go home and do some gardening (in the now settling snow) was well received.
Best placed in class over the three races on the day was James Deaton from Royal Harwich YC in his Topper.
The forecast for Sunday is looking positively balmy with a decent breeze so come and join us. There will be three races, wind permitting and we will then be back on schedule.
