MDL Royal Torbay Yacht Club Regatta 2000 - Day 2

by Matt Curthoys 23 Aug 2000 09:59 BST

The second day of the MDL Torbay Royal Regatta 2000 started in sunshine and 12-14 knots of wind. With the wind having swung around the South East overnight, the swell was starting to form in the bay, giving more choppy upwind sailing for the 3 IRC classes.

The first race started at 1030, with 3 rounds of a windward/leeward course set. With quite long legs set, and the speed difference between the highest and lowest rating yachts in each class, the race was shortened at the end of the last run.

For the second race, the committe set a conventional triangle and sausage course. With the wind having strengthened now to 14-16, with the odd 18 knot puff coming in, the reaches looked to be exciting. In class 1, the lead yacht, Maverick 2 had to drop their spinnaker to make the wing mark and other yachts were broaching trying to hold high enough. For the bowsprit yachts in the fleet, this was the oppurtunity to male some ground, with the J 80, J-String and the Freemantle 8, Claphamomnibus, going from the back of the fleet to first and second round the leeward mark!

In class 1, Maverick 2 won the first race, with Krush second and Quick Brew third. In race 2, Krush beat Maverick 2 while Danos came in third.

For Class 2, Celavie took 2 bullits, with Flair iii second in race one with X-Treme third. In race 2, the runners up positions were Encore followed by Flair III third.

For Class 3, Xarifa was first in race 1, with Kandoo second and New Moon third. In race 2, New Moon won, with Xarifa second and Kando third.

Overall, Maverick 2 leads Krush and Dansos in IRC 1. Celavie leands Flair III nad Encore in class 2 with Kandoo leading Xarifa and New Moon in class 3. there is only one race left, but not one of the classes is sewn up yet.
