MDL Royal Torbay Yacht Club Regatta 2000 - Day 1

by Matt Curthoys 22 Aug 2000 09:25 BST

In a mixed day of conditions, from rain and little to no wind, to bright sunshine and 10-12 knots, the MDL Torbay Royal Regatta 2000 had its first two races.

The first race for the 3 classes of IRC racing, and the Portsmouth Yardstick class started in light breezes and sunshine. A large windshift just after the Class 1 start meant that the beat of the triangle became a fetch, with the first reach also a fetch. A new windward mark was laid for the second windward leg. With the winds so light at the beginning of the race, the committe had no choice but to shorten the course at the end of the first sausage.

The second race started in bright sunshine and about 8-10 knots of breeze. With the wind constantly moving right then up the beats right always paid, with anyone going left at all losing to the fleet. With the constantly swinging breeze the committee was again forced to lay new windward marks for the windward/leewards. The wind gradually built throughout the race to about 12 knots at the end, with the racing finishing in glorious sunshine, both at the finish line and the bar afterwards!

For the first race in class 1, the Prima 38 "Hi Expectations" came in first on handicap, with Maverick 2, the IMX 40 second. 3rd was the Dehler 39, Allan Meredith's Quick Brew. In race 2, Maverick took the bullit, with Danos, the Comfortina 38 from Torquay sneaking second in before Hi Expectations in third.

In race 1 of class 2, Flair III, the Elann 333 from Poole came in first on the water and on handicap in race 1. Second was the Freemantle 8, Claphamomnibus, charted by Davina Capham, on the water and handicap, having just managed to hold off the X-332 Celavie owned by Roger and Sally Lean. For the second race, the J-92, Richardsons Seat, took both line honours and first place on handicap, Clavie was 2nd and Flair III was third.

In class 3, The J24, Italian Job was first, with Smokey 3 second and Hydrodjinn, the Hydro 28 third in race 1. In race 2, Kandoo, the Albin Ballad of C W McKeon was first with Satsuma, a Contention 33 second and Vlad the Impala third.
