With the third of the RLymYC Scow Late Series blown away the previous Monday, everyone was watching the weather for the final race on the 26th September. The rain had ceased and there was a decent breeze, 12-13 knots from just West of South.
Race Officer Ken Hay set a course out to the Scott Bailey mark via West Inner, a beat into a weak flood tide. There was enough current to encourage mud hopping along the Oxey shore before making a long tack out to the mark. Several boats cut the mud too fine and lost places as a result. First round were Rory and Alex Paton with Gordon Stredwick not far behind and Jo and Freya Hutchinson in third. This was the order at the finish and gave Rory and Alex the overall prize for the Gold Fleet. The Hutchinsons were second overall and Melissa Carrell took third place.
In Silver fleet Kate Thornton and David Wagstaff made it three in a row, building a commanding lead from the start. There was a tussle for second place between John Evans and Roger Wilson, finishing so close that they were awarded equal second place. Pel Bruce was 4th. Kate Thornton and David Wagstaff were the Series winner with Roger WIlson second and Sonia Goacher and Carol Maskell third.
This season has seen record numbers afloat in both Scow fleets, a host of new competitors and a marked increase in the number of younger competitors, attracted by the close, one-design racing on offer and the good natured spirit on the water and in the clubhouse afterwards.
