The ground-breaking new-look Sail to Win series has today doubled in size with the publication of two fantastic new books. Taking a fresh look at the complex subject of racing, these books are full of practical and experiential information, tips and advice in a concise and highly illustrated format to get sailors powering round the racecourse and charging up the leaderboard.
The books will be formally launched at Southampton Boat Show at 2.50pm on Friday 16th September on the Kelvin Hughes stand (J077) and you are welcome to join the publisher for the celebration. Sail to Win supports the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation and representatives of ASSF are thrilled to be attending the launch, along with the authors who will be ready to sign copies for you.
Wind Strategy by David Houghton & Fiona Campbell
The wind powers everything a sailor does and this book will help you to understand it. As a result you will be more prepared for your race, able to anticipate changes in the wind better and know what to do when they come. The first edition of this book was published in 1986, and it has been the go-to wind book for racing sailors ever since. This new-look fourth edition is fully updated for modern forecasting. It explains the principles of weather systems, sea breezes, and the effect of mountains, valleys, peninsulas and water temperature on the wind and how sailors can use this knowledge to get ahead of the competition and power up the leaderboard. There is also a chapter focussing on in depth analysis of a revised set of popular racing venues around the world: unveiling what to expect from the weather at over 25 regatta locations.
Double Olympic silver medallist and Volvo Ocean race winning skipper Ian Walker writes: "Weather is multidimensional and rarely simple but in this book both David and Fiona expertly explain what can be a complicated subject in an easily understandable format. You will remember or learn something every time you pick up this book. I can guarantee that something you learn in this book will help you improve your racing results. Remember it all and you may no longer be the sailor in the bar explaining how 'unlucky' you were when the wind shifted against you!"
Tuning to Win by Ian Pinnell
For most sailors, boat tuning may seem a mystery understood only by sailmakers and the like. In this book, sailor, chandler and championship winner Ian Pinnell unravels this daunting subject and will help improve your boatspeed as a result. Since most races are won or lost by a difference of less than 2% of racing time, you will soon be moving up the fleet. With hundreds of photos and diagrams to illustrate every point, the book clearly explains what each control does and how to set it up optimally for different conditions. Additional troubleshooting and skills sections take things even further, making this the bible of dinghy tuning.
ASSF Trustee and double Olympic gold medallist Iain Percy writes: "Ian Pinnell, who has won more championships than most of us can dream of, explains with clear text, photographs and diagrams how to tune your dinghy for maximum boatspeed. Once you have that, you can concentrate on your own performance."
Published as paperbacks and eBooks on 13th September 2016 by Fernhurst Books as part of their Sail to Win series, Wind Strategy and Tuning to Win will be available to buy from all good bookshops, websites and direct from www.fernhurstbooks.com. They will be available from the Kelvin Hughes stand (J077) at the Southampton Boat Show.
