OK Northern Championship at Sunderland Yacht Club

by Gavin Waldron 27 Jun 2016 07:12 BST 25-26 June 2016

Race 1

Deryck Lovegrove and Keith Byers hit the left hand corner after noticing the windshift before the start and rounded in that order with Simon Cawood chasing. Simon sailed into first at the end of the run. Dave Bourne and Richard Burton passed Keith on the second run, Dave also passed Deryck to snatch 2nd with Deryck third and Burt 4th.

Race 2

Simon led the 2nd race from the start and never looked like being challenged. Burt and Dave fought all the way round, just in front of Gavin Waldron and Ed Crichton. Ed sailed into 4rd on the 2nd beat & with Burt scoring an OCS that turned into a 3rd. Gavin held on to 4th with Keith 5th and Colin Meddows-Smith close behind in 6th. With the wind falling the third race was postponed for an early start in the morning.

Race 3

Sunday greeted with bright sunshine, but the wind not arriving in line with the forecast. with slightly less breeze than Saturday from multiple directions. With the tide running from right to left across the course the fleet went left, leaving Burt and Gavin on the right side of middle with a large lead that was never challenged. Burt pulled further away during the race to take a resounding win. The only real race was for 3rd, with Keith coming out on top from Ed and Ken Carrol finishing well in 5th.

Race 4

Burt led the final race from start to finish, pulling out a large lead by the end to take the meeting. Paul Pike arrived at the 1st mark in 2nd with Paul Dutton following in 3rd. Gavin overtook Paul on the run but then Dave passed Gavin on the 2nd beat to take 3rd in the race & 2nd overall. Gavin managed to hand on to 4th to win the reporting duties, with Keith not quite able to improve his 5th.

Thanks to Sunderland Yacht club for their on water organisation & the off the water hospitality, as well as serving up the sunshine whilst the rest of the country suffered the Glastonbury rain.
