The forecast for this year looked like it might be a repeat of last year's rowing race for the Peter Andreae Trophy but the predicted gale force winds went through early and the competitors had sunshine and a north westerly wind of 12 – 15 kts gusting to 20 kts: perfect conditions for Lymington River Scows, which loaned from the Club's Wednesday Junior Sailors Fleet. Fourteen of the Clubs finest young sailors braved the weather to compete in the event, which is only open to sailors under the age of 21. The Competitors were split into two fleets for the heats with the best three from each fleet going into the final.
PRO Stuart Jardine set a two lap course from the southern end of the Club pontoon with short beat to a windward mark to starboard at the north end of the pontoon over to the Walhampton side of the river to a jibe mark and back across the river to a leeward mark just off the South end of the Harbour Masters pontoon and then a beat back through the starting. All starts were fiercely contested and challenges at the marks came thick and fast with the added challenge of working the shifty conditions in front of the clubhouse made for excellent viewing from the warmth of the bar. Competitors hiked out in a fashion many an older Scow owner remembers well but doesn't often put into practice.
James Eales won the Silver Peter Andreae trophy on the last leg, having changed places on several occasions with Will Bedford in the final. All the competitors received a fair cash prize from the fund left to the Club for this event in the name of Peter Andreae.
Our thanks must again go to all the Volunteers, afloat and ashore and particularly this year to David Weller who came down to help ensure all the boats were rigged correctly on behalf of the WJS Fleet.
Overall Results:
1st James Eales
2nd Will Bedford
3rd= Sarah Jarman and Stephen Jarman
5th Danielle Thomas
6th Ronnie Cubitt
