RC Laser TT at Two Islands Radio Yacht Club

The day dawned with a promising blue sky and a light southerly 'A rig' kind of breeze. The blue sky disappeared for the rest of the morning but returned in the afternoon.

The club takes its name from the two Islands at the two extremes of the sailing area, the islands also form a bit of an obstruction to the wind and this fact coupled with some gusty conditions (nothing to a top end A rig), made the beats very interesting indeed. Time and again a poor start could be remedied by choosing the correct side of the course to find the new breeze.

The course was set in the old style (because we like it that way) with a beat, a reach, a close fetch and a run to the leeward mark, the races lasted around 15 mins and we fitted in fourteen races before the RO Neil Coleman decided to bring proceedings to an end.

Four skippers got wins recorded on the score sheet which proves how close the racing was and how mistakes got punished. However Mr Consistency, Dave Fowler and ex National Champ made fewer mistakes than most, taking six wins mostly in the morning to claim his place at the front of the fleet overall.

Keith Coxon saw himself in second place at the end of the morning session but had to put up with third overall when Adrian Tomlinson put in a late flurry of three wins in the afternoon to take second spot. Most notable sail of the day from Two Islands point of view was by Jeff Ford who had not been sailing at the lake for over a year but managed three wins during the day and bagged himself 4th spot and a couple of beers as a result.

The races were sailed in a good spirit, so much so I think Keith got suckered a time or two by extreme politeness from Adrian who asked very politely if Keith would like some water at the mark, something we are not really used two at Two Islands. Great fun, good sailing and good company.

Hopefully we can attract a few more entries from other clubs next year and then they can join with John Faulkner from Aldenham and Roger Atkins from Droitwich who got themselves some valuable racing time on the water with us this year.
