K1 Midland Area Trophy at Draycote Water Sailing Club

by Paul Handley 24 Apr 2013 22:17 BST 20 April 2013

The second K1 Midland Area Trophy event took place at Draycote Water SC on 20th April with 13 K1s from 11 sailing clubs competing for the title.

Sunshine made a pleasant break from the cold spell with fairly light wind and plenty of shifts to make racing a challenge.

Simon Jones of Wimbleball SC stepped up to the challenge to open his account with first place in the first race followed by Mike Deane of South Windermere SC in second place and Don Spencer of Ogston SC third.

In the second race Neil Cooke of Tewkesbury CSC made the running and took the gun with Simon Jones second, Mike Deane third and Mike Green of Wimbleball SC in fourth place.

This set the scene for a shoot out between Simon and Neil in the final race but it was John Shimell of Chew Valley SC who got away to finish first followed by Don Spencer. Neil and Simon finished third and fourth respectively so the overall win and Trophy went to Simon Jones by one point from Neil Cooke.

The next three places overall all finished on 5 points with the scoring system separating them to John Shimell 3rd, Don Spencer 4th and Mike Deane 5th.

The K1 Class would like to thank Draycote SC for hosting the event and are now looking forward to some river racing at Tewkesbury SC followed by the Inland Nationals at Oxford SC.
