Sunday Early Points Series at Lymington Town Sailing Club - Race 5

by Barry Sticklen 27 Mar 2012 10:33 BST 25 March 2012

Twenty three boats had signed on, eleven in the fast fleet & twelve in the medium fleet for race no 5 of the LTSC Sunday Early Points series. It was the first morning of British Summer Time. Tig Williams was the race officer assisted by Nick Fagan. The tide would be flooding for the duration and the wind was coming from the East ranging from 4 knots to 7 and there was wall to wall sunshine.

The D-Ones were out in force again this morning with Giles Chipperfield taking on the early lead in the fast fleet. Another D-One was next showing with Nick Simmons at the helm. John & Becci Wigley in their RS 400 split the D-Ones up keeping Dave Gorringe, in the third D-One behind them. By the end of the second & final lap Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey in their international 14 had caught and overtaken Giles to take line honours and John & Becci had caught Nick to push him back to 4th. When the handicaps were applied though, it was back to the first lap, over the water positions with Giles first, Nick second & John & Becci third.

The medium fleet got away a few minutes later, Richard Russell in his RS 100 was first to show with Myles Mence chasing him in his Blaze, with another Blaze, that of Stewart Watson in 3rd position. Over the three laps of the medium fleet race the order & positions over the water would not change for the first six boats. At the finishing line Richard was first to cross, stretching out his lead over Myles to just over 6 minutes, Myles had also done the same to Stewart Watson, pulling ahead by almost 4 minutes. When the handicaps were applied it made no difference to the first three positions.
