Laser Open at Nantwich & Border Counties Sailing Club

by Paul Williamson 8 Jun 2010 07:50 BST 5-6 June 2010

The Nantwich & Boarder Counties Laser Open meeting brought together competitors from both the Midlands and Northern Grand Prix circuits. After a week of glorious sunny conditions the weather broke and the fleet were greeted with a damp day, fortunately the wind built throughout the day which caught some of the fleet off guard in the last race with a few capsizes.

The racing was close at the start of the first race until Rob Lennox (Barnt Green) and Paul Williamson (Staunton Harold) broke free from the pack. Rob led until the penultimate lap when Paul picked up a gust and lift on the left side of the course which gave him the lead which he held on until the end of the race. Third place was taken by Chris Keeling from Nantwich with Russell Lewis from Barnt Green in fourth.

The second race followed a similar pattern to the first but this time Rob Lennox made no mistakes and held on to the lead to take the finishing gun with Paul Williamson second. Third place this time went to Kaye Tickle (Leigh and West Lancs) closely followed by Elliot Hanson (Redesmere) sailing a Radial in fourth place.

In the freshening breeze of the final race Andrew Brown from Budworth led from start to finish. Elliot Hanson managed to keep Paul Williamson just behind him for the first few laps until a couple of mistakes by Williamson on one beat put him firmly in third place with Russell Lewis taking his second fourth of the day. A mistake on the start line put Rob Lennox into the second rank, a position from which he could not recover from which gave the event to Paul Williamson.
