10-11 July 2004
37 Mirrors from as far away as Lake Windermere and Brightlingsea gathered at the Mount Batten Centre in Plymouth to contest the Western Area Championship hosted by Plym YC. The wind was mainly force 2-3, but very shifty west to south-westerly. Race Officer Mike Pearson set some good long lines in the tricky conditions and used his black flag to curb any over enthusiastic starting. During the racing there was Air Display (part of Sport Relief) on the Barbican which made almost impossible to concentrate at times.
Racing was very close with RYA Youth Squad members Juliet Long, from Plym YC, showing the most consistent performance, but unable to win any individual race and Robert Struckett, from Itchenor SC, being a little less consistent, but managing wins in races 1, 3 and 5. Martin Egan from Restronguet SC was the leading adult but was pressed hard by another Youth Squad member James Ellis from Plym YC who won race 2. The Championship went right down to the wire and was decided on the last beat of the last race when Struckett, who had rounded 2nd managed to catch Long to take 1st place on the line and win the Championship on count back.
