Barcelona Olympic Classes Sailing Week Update

by Cristina Barredo 8 Apr 2000 10:21 BST

312 sailors and 201 registered boats have competed today in the three fields dedicated to that purpose. The races have started at 13:00 PM.

Winds from the SE/SW at a speed between 10 and 12 knots. Three races of each Olympic class except for the 49er which has had a total of four races. Up until today, 16 races of each category have been sailed on every category although there have been only 8 races on 49er.

470 Male

At the 470 male, this Sailing week is highlighted by Petri Leskinen/K. Heinilia from Finland who are in the eight position at the ISAF classification. They are unstoppably pushing to raise their place in this competition, which is being classified at a level 2. Right behind them, the American Paul Foerster/B. Merrick and the French Gildas Philippe/Tanguy Cariou who are the number 1 team in the ISAF classification. Gustavo Martinez Doreste/Tunte Cantero are not very lucky in this Barcelona sailing Week.

470 Female

The Catalan Natalia Via Dufresne/ Sandra Azon are still in the same position although they have to fight very hard against the Ukrainian Ruslana Taran/O. Pakholchyk, the Russian Vlada Kratchoun/Ngapanovit, and the Australian Jenny Amstrong/B. Stowell.

49er

There has been a lot of excitement in the field Charlie, where races in the category of 49er and Tornado have taken place. Weather and sea conditions have been also a little bit softer than yesterday, which has made boats to reach their maximum possibilities. The Spanish World Champions, Santiago Lopez/Javier de la Plaza are still on top of the general classification. Their fellow competitors, Iker Martinez/Xavi Fernandez have also controlled their two other strong competitor teams, the French Marc Audineau/ J Farnarier, and specially the other aggressive team composed by Dimitri Dervelle/P. Gasparini. The Portuguese Alfonso Domingues/ D. Cayolla have fought very passionately in the four races today.

Tornado

At the Tornado category, the Spanish Fernando Leon/Pepote Ballester have lost a few places in the general classification. Today they have had to compete directly with the French team made by Pierre Pennec/Y. Guichard (4 place in the general classification) and also against Christiphe Mourniac/Philippe Mourniac who have the sixth place. Both of the French teams were the first ones in the general classification up until today. The Spanish have recuperated the third position in today¹s races, which neutralises the French teams.

Europe Female

At the Europe Female category there is a hard competition between the German Petra Niemann/ Christiane Petzke and the Spanish Helen Montilla, Neus Garriga and Vanesa Almeida.

At the same time, the Spanish are competing against each other since there is still room for one more in the same category for the Sidney competitions. Today, the German sailors were still the strongest and right behind them, was the Catalan Helen Montilla.

Laser

Laser class is under the Portuguese (Gustavo Lima) and Argentinean control (Sebastian Mazza, Lucas Gonzalez, Martin Kuding, and Miguel Poli. The Spanish Luis Martinez and Angelo Taberne can not improve their position.
