Heron Southerns at Chipstead Sailing Club

by Jon Hunt 28 Jun 2003 15:39 BST 22nd June 2003

The weather forecast was for thundery showers, winds S to SW and very light winds, which proved to be spot on. Despite these difficult conditions the OOD set three courses all with committee boat starts allowing a beat to the first windward mark. The first race encompassed the length of the lake and was shortened to one lap. Peter Moulton ( Chipstead S.C. ) using local knowledge just managed to beat Nigel Darby ( Eyott S.C. ) into first place.

The second and third races were two figure of eights using only the west end of the lake. Nigel Darby ( Eyott S.C. ) getting an excellent start kept his position to finish first in the second race, with Martin Treadway ( Chipstead S.C. ) mastering the vagaries of light winds at Chipstead winning the third race.

Not a very exciting days racing but one to test the skills and patience of those participating. The OOD and his team were congratulated on providing an enjoyable days racing despite the difficult conditions.

Thanks go to the three travellers and the eight home boats, all of whom showed considerable sailing ability in completing what was a very testing day.
