slight issue here is that it's hard to upload videos to be accessible.... unless the Yachts and Yachting management want to make a few Gigabytes of webspace available to us?!

interesting all these videos...but two comments (from someone with no brief for or against skiffs or windsurfers)

  • the porpoising that the boats are all doing suggests big potential improvements in rocker lines. windsurfers used to do that...now they don't
  • i get the impression that - apart from a few clips - windsurfers would go much faster....does that seem reasonable?  i think it's from the crashes, they seem slow compared to a windsurf wipeout..

The Twelve "porpoising" is part of sailing them in 35knots of breeze with an 18ft mast and standing behind the trasom with all four feet of the crew  other wise you end up doing this. Note the outrigger with the fruitloops ( footstraps ). This boat placed forth in our Interdomions (the closest we get to a world title)

The AUS Cherub is an Intermediate class with plenty of juniors.  If you want an advanced, balls out 12 foot dinghy.....  In OZ, you get a 12 foot Skiff.

Great regatta with 70 participants on the books.  All soughts of Dinghies, Skiffs and a few cats.  Most cat boys did not know about the regatta, pre season maintanance being carried out or at early National Titles.  Next year would like to get the word out to the Cat guys and get a strong showing.

There was 2 A Class, Hobie Tiger, F-16 sloop, 2 F-16 cat, Taipan 5.7.

All cats showed good pace with the F-16 sloop, Tiger and Taipan 5.7 dicing closely with the 18 Skiffs with the 2 A's not far behind.  Would like to get the Tornadoes, Super Taipan and the gun F18 guys there next year to realy ruffle some feathers.

More than enough for the boat mate.  Rememer it has an all up weight of 75 kg or 165 lb.

Spinnaker cats travel down wind a lot quicker, so smaller, flatter kites that produce less drag is quicker for them.  Cats have gone down the path of big kites with big sholders like the skiffs but were slower.  Flatter (less drag) = faster.

Jumping from skiff to cat and using kite, you notice that even with simular kite sizes, there is less load on the cat kites due to boats moving and more importantly, accelorating better.

Yeah Dude bigger isn't always better just look at you spice kite
experiance.

It's a balancing act between area, shape and drag.

Apparent wind angle is the overriding factor with regard to depth (flatness).  Hence multis typically have much flatter kites.

Indeed; My first kite was flat (by dinghy standards - comments were made at Grafham) and weach of my following 2 kites have been flatter still.

The only time when "Flat is Fast" on Cats is when talking about Kites

I towed someone on an old sailboard behind my topper when I was but a wee nipper, that was fun. Well, not really, slow just isnt a descriptive enough word for how dull it was

I think it's time all these videos had a bit of pop culture you know a little
life style as well as the sailing...

Yes there should be a Loco Mk2 at some stage in the near future, with
any luck.

And I've got this idea for Cherub MTV at the stand next year. So
if anyone nicks the idea, you heard it here first!

I've never seen a MPS in the flesh, those clips of them sailing downwind are excellent, they're ripping downwind and look to be easily as fast as the 49ers sailing with them!

all down to that secret timing, though we havent had a weekend like that
since then i dont think! - I was sailing down in south west wales, was similar
conditions but not quite as windy, just 4.0 metre weather.

Crazy the range in windsurfing, down in weymouth for the speedweek some
of the pros were taking out 12.5 metre rigs for the light winds (12.5 metres
is the same as a 700 sail    ) The biggest ive got is only 8m, small in
comparison!!
