No i care, sorry I didnt reply.

Yeah its soo annoying that sports liek football get masses of coverage and sailng get as good as nothing,

But I can se the point of veiw that there isnt a strict league style layout so that you can say that soandso is the best by somany points etc. but it would be good to have a bit more information on what is goin on.

the thing is you cant have weekly updates other wise you will be jumping from one class to another each week, as the are rarely clases that sail events worthy of national television coverage, every week.

Slowly we seem to be getting more sailing flitered through but it is mostly yacht sailing, apart from when the olympics was on.

in aus they cover the 18ft skiff sailing they all of the grand prie events

all we get is a bit of kill boat recing if we are lukey

Date Posted: 17 Mar 05 at 9:32pm

'kill boat' lol

yeah that is the good thing about having french TV as well they have more coverage of sailing, admitidly lots of keel boat racing.

I think if we get to host the olympics then we will get more coverage based on the results of the sailing in the last olympics.

but we also did well in 2000 and there was not much then

-------------

Posted By: KnightMare
Date Posted: 17 Mar 05 at 9:52pm

Yeah but we are getting coverage now, I think it did realy start with 2000 so that this time round they were looking out for the sailors before the event started and not jsut looking back on it and going, oh there is this sport called sailing and oh we seem to have got some medals.

They actualy set out to do a bit of coverage of the races leading up to the all important last races. So its improving.

most people that don't live near the cost think that sailing is a sport where you just sit there and do nofing when i talk about it at school they say that is not a sport all you do is sit there and they think that you are just lasey if there was more on tv people would see how hard it is

-------------

Posted By: KnightMare
Date Posted: 17 Mar 05 at 10:05pm

Yeh true but slowly people at my school are begining to believe it isnt that hard as every week i used to come in with bruises. lol

I definatly think that more sailnig on TV would raise the awarness of sailing, but if it isnt filmed properly then it could lead to a boring bit of TV and put people of of sailing.

You must get bettter french channel than I  .

Our only sailing coverage are about offshore races which is good but we never hear of dinghy racing. Obviously it would be 420 or 470 races ...

To be fair, Ellen and Mike Goulding got about the same as our local Fball teams on the local news prog when the Vendee etc was on. The trouble is,1 sailing progs have a small audience, and 2, what would they show? There are so many championships and classes. If you want to get people outside the sport interested you need a focus, like the Olympics.Maybe a high profile 18ft skiff series, but they tried it with the Ultra 30's a few years back, which was good while it lasted, but it died in the end. There's loads about this on the previuos thread....

when sailing is as cheap to televise as sports such
as darts, snooker, golf, rowing, football, rugby,
bowls, athletics, skiing, motorsport etc etc, we will
see alot more!

Unfortunately we are combining a sport with a
limited audience with a costly production. Sailing
requires boats and or helicopters, whereas all those
listed above require no more than a cameraman to
sit on his fat a*se eating crisps with no more than a
high-lift platform!

think thatīs the point that sailing is so rare in tv. thatīs also the point in germany. there are too less poeple who watch it cause sailing is a outsider sport here and so they think it doesnīt worth the effort. but if things like the finish of ellen macarthur happens even we see it in tv. rarely it was ellen macarthur who made the record, but better than nothing!

Amazing, watching prime time national evening news in NZ one of the
main stories in the sports round up was about the restructuring of NZ
Yachting following the poor performance in Athens, they went into quite a
lot of detail and even mentioned the RYA and the success of the British
team... no wonder everyone was so well informed about the ins and outs
of the AC, and everythign else NZ connected, like the new super maxi
'Maximus'... it was the same wherever you went.

Oh for coverage like that!

what chanel isfrench tv can we get it in the uk

You can get TV5, the French-speaking channel, with cable and satellite. It used to be free but costs a couple of quid a month now with ntl . It's a general interest channel, with a lot of news, fictions and debates - programmes from all over the francophone community: Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, West Africa, Polynesia, etc. as well as French. There are also quite a few films, repeated up to six times throughout the month. They're usually subtitled into French, which might seem like a waste of time until you try and follow the plot. Not-so-proficient French learners have told me how useful this was.

If you want complete programme listings, have a look at http://www.tv5.org - www.tv5.org

Bon courage !

yeah believe me those subtitles are very useful, especialy in some of the crazy french films that they show. And yeah 5420 it is still in french, but thats a bonus i can improve my french whilst watching something intersting.

Now all we need to try and get in NZ TV. form some of that good sailing comentary.

when i went to germany for 2 months i couldnt sail and it was really annoying. the only thing i saw on tv about sailing was on CNN about once a week but i swear it was the same program just repeated each week for a month. it was really focused on keelboat racing and the major events, which was a bit annoying.

but the thing is there are so many classes that you couldnt get a program with good enough detail and still have the variety.

Ouch! That's a little harsh on poor 5420... He might be suffering from a debilitating condition that alters spelling abilites  until he really tries, that is!

You've got to admit Much FWB has a point there, 5420... You can get away with any approximation of English in the Banter section (that's why I'm always there!), but other topics are easier to follow when posts are in English.

Merci !

sailing is the only sport that appeals to all people in the world if they give it a try! Confusedits not on telly because not enough new people (producers) are trying it!Angry so if any of you lot know any producers take them out! but make sure you dont hit them over the head with a boom!LOL
