Anyone know why Sunsail have shut down all their Turkish clubs this year? (can't just be because I applied for a job!! )

Perhaps they haven't been as profitable as they might have hoped, so they're using the Global Financial Crisis™, Credit Crunch© or Convenient Catch All Excuse For Any Cutbacks® to shut em?

I was wondering if they had problems with licence renewal, or problems with Turkish authorities/regulations.

Apparently the Turkish government would not give them enough visa's
for the staff, they wanted a more Turkish ratio in the centres
and SunSail wanted to keep the Nannies and Beach Staff English speaking.
So they shut down this year.

After more than an hour on hold tonight,
my paid for holiday was switched to Greece OK.

and an official answer from someone at Head Office:

I work in the Sunsail head office and therefore wanted to post to give you full information regarding our Sunsail Clubs in Turkey and help clear up all speculation.

We are extremely disappointed that we have had to take this decision not to operate our Sunsail Clubs in Turkey this summer - our Yacht and Flotilla operations, however, will remain unaffected, as will our Clubs in Greece and Antigua.  The decision has been taken for a number of reasons that impact our ability to deliver the exceptional holidays we pride ourselves on - and that our customers expect from us.

Sunsail offers a unique product which relies heavily on the use of specialist staff, for example instructors who hold RYA qualifications.  Turkish law requires us to employ 20% UK staff versus Turkish staff ratio - our current model is 35% due to our standard operating procedures, so we would need to recruit and train Turkish staff to fill these specialist roles.  Unfortunately our business model is not currently set up to be able to do this for 2009 and therefore we have taken the difficult decision to not operate our Sunsail Clubs in Turkey this year.

We have identified a number of alternative holiday options for customers who have already booked a holiday in Turkey with Sunsail Clubs and these customers have all been written to.  The customer care line has full details of these options, and can be contacted on 02392 334599.

Thanks, Fiona

Seems Turkey has shot themselves in the foot over that...65% of something is better than 80% of nothing.

Was there any negotiation with the Turkish authorities before the decision was taken?

Sad mum you should try some of the other companies.

We are going to Greece with Seafarer Holidays, one week beach club and one week flotilla. They were a lot cheaper than Sunsail and they still had availability. Perhaps less equipment and a different style to Sunsail.

Anyone on here been to Seafarers base in Greece?

Sad Mum,

I too had difficulties getting thru but have now had a good outcome. While I was considering my options I looked into Sailing Holidays. They were very very helpful and I'm likely to consider them in the future. They have a week flotilla/one week villia with hire car from Lefkas and cefalonia see:-

Errrr and the turkish government can't understand the reluctance of other member nations to let them in the EU!

You can't have your cake and eat it.  You either have to embrace freedom of movement for workers and gain by investment from overseas or you have to encourage your own companies to fill the markets, you can't expect to have inward investment with no corresponding influx of foreign workers.  Apprently the lessons that should have been learnt by this paticular nation over 200 years ago still haven't sunk in!

And the Greeks will have no problem taking cash that was destined for them.

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

Quite......

I just feel sorry for those people (including in this thread) who had a booking for this season. I hope they can get something sorted out.

Hi,

Did you go to the Ionian Beach Club in Greece in the end?  I am looking at going there this summer but am not too sure - i have the responsiblity of booking my brother's family too!  Am desperate to get some feedback from someone's who's been to the resort, it's a lot better price than Sunsail but still quite a lot to pay if the organisation/boats aren't up to much.

Regards,
Julia
