A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Peter Harrison says

“The America’s Cup is a very valuable marketing opportunity in terms of brand awareness, association and media coverage as well as offering hospitality opportunities in over 10 pre-regattas as well as the 2007 final events. With over 10m visiting spectators expected, I believe that the ‘World Cup of Sailing’, offers a guaranteed return on investment for any organisation to tap into. It is tragic that no corporate partner has yet come forward to take on this exciting and valuable opportunity.”

Obviously the UK corporate backers do not believe this statement.

I don't think any of the syndicates are really getting sponsorship for hard-headed commercial reasons. It is more a matter of billionaires' whims. There is nothing particularly wrong with that but it seems there are no UK billionaires who want to play the game.

If you look at what commercial backers want, it is huge audiences (which sailing won't get), and media-friendly personalities, which UK sailing, for all it's competitive talent, is fairly short of, Ellen MacArthur being the obvious exception. I recently saw the Vendee Globe described in one paper as "the race Ellen MacArthur made famous", which in UK terms is probably true.

What do you think of when you hear "America's Cup". Billionaires with huge egos and even huger teams of lawyers. If you are not already into sailing, lengthy races where half the time you can't tell who is winning and the other half the same boat is miles ahead the whole race. It isn't really that attractive to 99% of the public, is it?

Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see a British team win the AC and I personally find it a fascinating event. I am just exploring why commercial sponship has not been forthcoming.

Expanding this topic, has there ever been a british sailor on the winning boat of either the Louis Vuitton cup or actual americas cup?

The (lack of) interest in the announcement of the probable demise of GBR Challenge  is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that Y&Y has yet to mention it in their News. If our "leading sailing magazine" doesn't think it's worth a paragraph, Peter Harrison obviously made the right decision.....

I think Andy Hemmings was sailing with Prada when they won the Louis Vuitton in the Cup before last.

Look what I just found on the BBC America's Cup website.

Oh dear, I hope my boss didn't want that paper by the end of today...
