So finally I've given in and conformed, you even get a certificate, like a logbook, telling you not to f**k about with it. First thing happens, I couldn't hide it down the boat park cos they're digging it up and resurfacing, so red handed it's in the drive, the Mrs now figuring on what she wants next as compensation after the tongue lashing (Why do you need ANOTHER boat!.)

A Contender FFS, well I guess at least I'll be able to walk under the boom, if that is I mange to launch it without getting a hernia.

And I'm going to get such a thrashing when its windy, probably wether they like it or not, I'll have to get a smaller rag at the end of the day, what's worse, not going out, or being chucked out for not being class legal?

The class rules only give maximum sizes. It looks to me as if you can make your sail as small as you want.
Personally I would just put in big flattening reef at the clew of an oldish sail to start with

Good luck with the Contender. I would say if you haven't got an aluminium trolley get one as every kilo saved up the beach is worth it. Oh and try and sail somewhere with a shallow concrete ramp.

I think I am a kind and considerate person , I just dislike grf and have no time to be nice to him anymore .
I been on this forum for over a decade as has grf. We have had loads of disagreements and he knows I’ve always thought his behaviour to people that disagree with him to be aggressive, personal and vile . He is the perfect troll Smile

The bottom line is ,I dislike grf , he knows it  but DOESNT CARE and I think we are both happy with the situation.LOL

I've long known it, I'm a windsurfer, nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I don't care, I should support Millwall, but instead I choose to torment dinghy sailors it's my God given talent. That Grumpycat, he just can't help himself, probably hates himself doing it in fact, but still he answers and it makes my day. And what a boring life it would be if we all sat round loving each other and saying nice things all the time, we could even join the liberal democrats.

That is one of the only two ways this can pan out lol. The boat will be either ,

1) the the best boat ever and it will allow our resident sailing god to demonstrate his sublime skills to his adoring fans.

Or

2) the boats a dog and it’s the RYA/class associations  fault. Oh it’s both their fault he was dog slow, plus the boat will be up of sale before the end of February. LOL

I await more news with baited breath .Smile

I already know it's a dog and before I've even sailed it. I consider the fact I've been forced to give in to purchasing a last century anachronism a tragic epitath on the grave of the dingy Industry.

But it's the same as the good sailors at my club use, and the other good sailors use a Laser, not much choice really, so like any other class when it's light and or there are tide anomalys I shall probably do OK and when it's windy I'll have my ass handed to me.

It's a pity no ingenuity can be applied to alter that, can't have class rules being broken so the little guys get to beat the big guys can we?

Tried one many moons ago, probably sailed it at the wrong place for it to be a fun experience.  Anything that gets you on the water has to be a good thing, but I suspect that what GRF is looking for does not exist or will be simply too challenging … I cannot help thinking that he will go in a loop of complexity and realise that he could go as fast on a board, which he can carry up the beach

Back to the Musto and some serious application of time on the water maybe?

Not my business to tell anyone what to do but I also wondered about Musto suitability, Farr 3.7 is short and twitchy.
I had a club mate with a Musto and he swore the hull form was more stable than a Contender. Being so light, I wonder if a Musto could still perform well with a smaller rig in 49erFX style.
Contender is heavy and long with considerable wetted area, can't see it going well with less sail. Sweet spot for short lightweights such as myself and perhaps iGRF is when I'm straight leg wiring and the big boys are still perching.

Have you got any pictures to post up of this Contender?
Is it brand new?
Bonezzi or Hartley, etc.?
What mast/sail will you use?

Posted By: iGRF

It's an old boat but in exceptionally good nick couple of previous careful owners and one who didn't use it too much, my local Contender hot shot came down with me to inspect and pick it up. Is it a Bob Hoare built model (don't profess to know much about history except to avoid Rondar) wavelenght sail which is pretty much the de rigeur preference and a crispy new P&B which is an unknown quantity I think the sail no is 704. Has a carbon mast and boom which is good and I already have a spare skinny carbon to mess about with in the fullness of time, but it didn't do me any favours on my fireblade (hybrid) experiment which failed its perfomance platform for trapezing test, it's still a great hiking single hander and an absolute demon in the light but it's not going to get me anywhere on my quest to beat the Contenders. So if you can't beat them....

AIUI, Keith Paul used to race one pretty effectively with a sail cut short in the leach?
Otherwise, forget about walking under the boom, there is a story of a Contender forestay pulling clean out of the deck at a Plymouth Nationals, the mast didn't even fall down because the clew was nearly on the aft deck anyway.

Ask me about the new kitchen makeover I've had to cough up as penance, that's doing fine thanks, as to the Contender it's exactly where I parked it up on the drive last year, whilst the torrent of grand people, their parents, their parents dogs, their xmas gifts, their vehicles and all the other detritus of modern xmas passed through.

Then the beach replenishment started, every year they wait for the perfect time (just before the winter storms that come along and remove their efforts) giant tonka toy articulated monster dumpster trucks carry shingle the length of Princes Parade (about two miles), we longingly look on from the coffee shack we visit, wishing we could be monster truck drivers and plotting to put in a bid for the contract just for the joy.

Meanwhile forget launching new Contenders over the ruts they create and contemplate designing a revolutionary Contender launching sled with a block and tackle device attached to the promenade wall. Rig Contender on the sled, sail it down the beach, as Contender floats off, a rope attached to the rear of the boat engages and pulls the sled back up the beach. The rope being continuous attached to weighted buoy drop below low water mark and on return, reverse process.

I wish...

Noo don't remind me, another disaster. I'd pretty much sold it, bear in mind it's been down the lake all through lock up and more, so I go to get some pics of it, for the would be new owner and..

The only redeeming part of that boat was the brand new sail, and it's now got extra windows, if it isn't otters or mink taking up residence it's mice or whatever else thinks dacron is a tasty dish. At this rate I'll be paying someone to take it away or take a chain saw to it for landfill.

One of the golden rules of dinghy parking. Never ever leave the sails onboard, particularly for extended periods.

Has anyone ever actually seen him on the water? Is there a small chance he is in fact just some weird russian bot sent to plague middle England?

Well finally I got the Contender on the water today, very little wind in the first race, which I completed 2nd to last, and not much more in the 2nd race but began to get the feel for it and as usual once the races were over the wind came up enough to get on the wire.

What can I say, well for starters I wasn't really firing on all cyclinders, this damn covid is lingering, going through the lethargic can't be asked phased so I kind of forced myself out there.

Couldn't get it to point, it doesn't handle like anything I've sailed before, not that it's difficult to sail, but it just doesn't work with my normal techniques, like stuffing it off the line, and as to trying to row it with a bit of kinetic input, by Christ it's heavy and takes it out of you, I lasted one reach then thought I was going to faint.

In the occasional puff you sort of have to free it off, the first tiller extension out of the bag was this plastic tube wobbly thing which was a right pain in the neck and trying to apply lee helm was a ball ache so I couldn't induce the flow over the foils to get it to the point I could harden up to where I thought it ought to be.

The next race was a little breezier and I minaged to hook in enough to sit out, and managed to piss it in during a tack with the bloody main sheet re-engaing after I'd uncleated it, it's one mother of a boat to get back upright, I hate to think what's going to happen when there really is some wind. As it was it was all I could do to beat the fastest laser out there who took me up wind and I had to jiggery pokery him sailing low back offwind so I wasn't exactly last in both races, but nowhere near the other Contenders, I'm going to have to take it out and maybe practise in it.
Straight on the water into a start line after a long layoff and illness perhaps not the way to approach things, but whatever it was better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick and at least I'm now on the mend physically, think I might have to pound the pavements this week try and rebuild my fitness, I'm going to enjoy learning how to make this thing go.

The only time I got close enough to one he tacked off rightly rather than have me on his lee. Then having got the shift I thought would massacre him, I had my misfortunate tack into the drink, so I don't know, but you know what it's like, if you don't feel you're doing it right, then you aint, like it says in the other thread a lot of it is in your head and mine was muddled.

No quite the opposite I've yet to meet a boat I can't get going in light weather, I'll work it out, I was late as well, literally just flung it together, didn't tune the sail, had a crap tiller extension had no idea what to expect really but as you say it was light so low risk. It's also the first time in decades I've come across a totally 'soft' sail with no full batten anywhere other than right at the head, so trying to get a decent AOA is also going to be problematic in light weather.

I did get a taste after the race of comfortably wiring (must have been all of 8 knots) then everything worked, could go high and it slowed a bit or foot it off and it flies which is what it likes, those massive foils just deliver once they've got water flowing over them, it's just working out how to make it go faster than the others, that may be a problem if there are no tactical things on offer.

These boats will always be slow in the light - not much rocker so lots of wetted area, a long boom so the leech gets pulled tight (better now with a carbon boom but still not great).

If you can be close to or beat Lasers in sib trapezing weather you are doing ok.

Just accept that you will win nothing in the light on handicap and everything in the breeze (if you sail it right !).

Amazing beautiful boats - but only when its windy (F3 upwards).

Enjoy it.

Well had a bit of a result 1st race today, the boys adjusted the rig raked it a bit more, (two more holes down) and they checked it by measuring with a tape measure, then one of those Loos Guages thingys I haven't seen since my MPS days. I still wasn't feeling really on it, but it was yet another light wind day which looked like it might get up coming from the East as it was on a rising tide which usually delivers a sideshore thermal, but not so today by the time I got out to the start line it was difficult to tell if there was anything and where it was coming from.

Then a few zephyrs appeared here and there and got some movement happening and I noticed the Port end was well favoured so hung around and banged a flyer in thinking they wouldn't even make it over the line on starboard, but they did and put me about so I banged left, they'd all swung back and were headed out to sea, which meant they missed a lolly little knock which once tacked on with a favorable tide meant I could sail it a bit free with the tide lifing me and bingo I'm in the frame for rounding first. Which was ruined by one of the Contenderati preferring to use his 10 mtr RS100 with kite and then the other Contender hot shot who took me using my favorite tactic sailing low into an oncoming tide, I'm struggling to make it go offwind, then the gybe results inot a very deep reach into an oncoming tide and I get lucky spotting that inshore header and flack over for a slow port dog leg, which proves better then tryinbg to dea run it and gets me to the bottom mark first, I round up and its now almost a fetch I can sail my style holding the boom to feel the pressure and slightly fee and I manage to get the bitch moving at last and begin to pull away. Eventually I end up just stealing the over the water line honours from my chum in his Phantom, which is really quick in these conditions, but it did wonders for my confidence in that it is possible, I'd beaten all the other Contenders, which last week I'd never have thought likely in a monthy of Sundays.

The wind had picked up a bit as the race was continuing so I stayed on for a 2nd race even though I was feeling knackered, got a good start and 1st beat got to the windward mark 1st again but it all fell apart again offwind and long story short I went from 1st to last as a combination of issues like last week decended upon my sad sorry arse including the infernal top batten constantly inverting offwind which drove me mental, but whatever, 2nd time out I'd got them in at least one race this last race can be blamed on fatigue and no residual technique to fall back on, I hate tacking with the too long wiggle stick, I hate the centre mainsheet position, all the rope, the length of the boat you have to run up and down, to the point I'm considering rear sheeting and some jury rigged off boom sheeting with cleat, haven't quite worked out yet what I'm going to do, but I can't be having all the stupid disasters that keep befalling me because my technique doesn't match this boat, so something's going to have to change and at my age it can't be me.
