Puma's 'Mar Mostro' have suffered a broken rig 2150 nautical miles from Cape Town. The third boat to be knocked out of action, and they haven't even got to the toughest part of the race yet. Are any of them going to make it round without something catastrophic happening?

Doesn't look that way, does it? Looks like tolerences have been shaved too fine in the search for speed.

And maybe that is why rigs are failing.... ie. strengthening one area just moves the weak spot somewhere else |

I'd be very worried if I was doing the race - If rigs are coming down in 23 knots of breeze, what the hell is going to happen when they hit really bad weather?

I think that sort of 20-28 knot region is the most dangerous for boat breakages. Anymore, say 40knots and they are in survival mode really, so quite often the rig is actually safer than when they are really hammering the boat at 100% go!
