does anyone know what happened to julian bethwaite's 2 person 18ft skiffs. I think the last one was called "prime 3"
just a friend was wondering what happened to them as he is looking for a new level in 2person skiff sailing, i suppose this is as extreme as it gets!!

According to the Bethwaite website Prime III is still sailing (no idea where) but it'll have been turned into a 3 person boat with skinnier wings I'd assume- there won't be any 18ft fleet that'll allow less than three crew or the 25ft wing span. The other thing that happened to Prime III is that it had an affair with a Tasar and gave birth to the B14. |

After Prime 3 arrived on the scene, the Int. 18 association had a meeting and agreed that the class norm would from that point onwards be 3 crew.
The B14 is a direct result of the experience of Prime 3. Tell your friend to have fun in their quest! |

I suspect:
a) As far as the helmsman is concerned sailing an 18 2-handed is similar to sailing it 3-handed. The big challenge in sailing it 2-handed is the extra work for the 'other' crew member - extreme fitness required.
b) You (sorry, your friend :-) can get the experience by sailing any 18 2-handed (albeit a less extreme experience if you choose a contemporary width-limited one).
