Simple-(ish) Question
Are the racing rules for dinghies the same as for Yachts? I.E Rule 18, 3 boat length zone, so on. Port vs Starboard is the same IRPCS and so on but I want to know if there are any differences with racing rules. I know for example engines must be off on the Preparatory signal? (query) |

There is one rule book. It covers, with appendices for certain types of racing, everything. Radio controlled models to round the world multihulls. Team racing, match racing, fleet racing. Sailboards follow the same rules. Rule 42 covers engines (it isn't just about pumping, ooching and sculling)- and is on from the Prep signal. The rule book is available for free, in pdf form, on sailing.org, the ISAF website. |

It's one of the challenges for the rule writers. The rules have to be equally applicable to maxis and Optimists.

Which is why they allow certain rules to be changed or deactivated by (variously, and it is listed who can change them) Class Rules, Event Sailing Instructions and National Authority Prescriptions.
