Well you learn something new every day! JimC's assertion is entirely reasonable, but I never realised there was such a significant problem with the Laser hull. I thought for a moment that craiggo had misused the word (apologies). The obvious example of an assymetric hull(s) would be the Hobie 16 catamaran. I now have a good excuse now, when I don't so well on one tack and then....... even worse on the other! Edited by Andymac |

I *very* much doubt there is a significant problem. Significant as requiring different handling on opposite tacks or causing any noticeable difference in performance. Edited by JimC |

So is craiggo overplaying it? Who does knows what the variance is, if there has been all these studies that concur? Would say 5 -10 millimetres really be all that remarkable? |

From memory I cant remember exactly the numbers that came up when I last saw it done, but it was small ie. less than 3mm diference in centreline to hull port/stbd.
There have always been those who claim the laser always sailed better on port but I reckon my 700 does and I think its more about our own dexterity rather than the boats. My original point though was if you make a correction to a known fault or defect in a design and start producing them as your own, have you infringed copyright? |

If it looks like a Laser it's a Laser regardless of a few mm here & there ... |

If all you've done is a minor change like fairing an error in a mold, yes you would have. Same as musicians who end up paying royalties when they've copied a chord sequence from someone else's work. It doesn't have to be identical to infringe copyright. |

Same as musicians who end up paying royalties when they've copied a chord sequence from someone else's work - doesn't have to be a chord sequence ... Dick Batt's (Batt sails) brother Mike Batt was sued for infringement of copyright of Cage's 4:33. Cage's 4:33 is that length of silence (though performed by a full orchestra), MikesBatt's piece "one minute" was 60 seconds of silence - though scored for different instruments... Be careful out there! |

I'd not heard that one! Does that mean that John Cage can sue everytime we have a minutes silence on Rememberance Sunday... |
