The problem I see with most of these methods is that they're the static loading, not shock. I'd guess the greatest loads the kicker sees are when the main is freed from being sheeted on hard to spilling power in a big breeze. The problem I'd see in using a spring balance on control lines would be the travel necessary but I guess it depends on the boat in question. Strain gauges would give you the data but logging it could be tricky.
