Are there any more photos of the adjuster mechenisum on this gantry? I am trying to work out what is going on. I am guessing the stainless steel tube is the return spring. Is that a Spinlock cleat in the middle of the tiller, and is that used to control the t-foil from the tiller extensions? Is the red line that goes to the bungy used to trip the cleat? I can't quite see what is going on with the grey line around the front of the prodder bit, part of the routing seems clear but I can't see what the bit that goes up around the small block and back down does. I need to build a new gantry with t-foil adjustment soon and am looking for ideas. I was thinking of simlair structure but not sure how best to make the moving part with good enough tolerances to get a tight fit into the boat part. |

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

Sorry I missed you on Saturday Graeme.
Rudder pitch itself is pretty normal using the rocking “biscuit in book” Method that I think Paul Bieker invented. The green cherub had a functionally similar system. My system has tbe rope going from hull round rack at my feet. The differences on mine are: A) the gas spring - gives 30kg of pull regardless of displacement and is a lot neater than the equivalent elastic. B) my boat has a gybeing dagger. Not many have these as apart from sub powered upwind they are net greater drag. And a pain to build and operate. As you really only want to adjust the foil and sheets, maybe the cunno / vang, don’t want to be pulling other strings. So seeing as the optimal tfoil angle is largely speed dependant, and so is gyber angle, I run the gyber adjust, which I ripped off something I saw on a pic of Chris Maas canoe, off a plunger that runs on a cam profile on the bottom of the biscuit. It works pretty well I think. Only thing is downwind in the light you still have the rudder on (bow down) but as you are going faster you don’t want the gybe. So I run a locker in the tiller through a spinlock pxr that I can pull on And trip off reomotely up the extensions. I’d originally hoped to run the foil adjust up the extensions but it quickly became clear that the leeward takeup precluded easing, so it got binned after day 2 of sailing. |

Yes, I was all over that Green Cherub as well and some Seth Efrican guy took time to explain some of what was going on, I think the guy on your boat was busy nipping off somewhere to be famous and important or something.
Before the show I'd been talking to Andy Patterson about having some sort of open ended cassette rudder system that would trip up should I ground it or be easier to launch off our beach. So I was looking about to see what everyone else was up to. Edited by iGRF - 08 Mar 18 at 10:09am |

The foiling guy was thinking on something similar with a retaining line on the back on a breakaway cleat to hold it in |

Thanks the description makes senceI can see more of what is going on. The pics show some really nice fabrication with all those brackets, very impressive.
I have had a look at the Green Cherub a few times and there are some nice touches on it too. Think a biscuit and book might be the way to go just need to work out how to build the bits. |

I make the book around the (oversized ie pre trimmed) biscuit.
For the biscuit get 12 mm dowel, release coat it with tape so it’s 13mm offer it up to some 12mm marine ply. Laminate 8 layers of uni around it and a couple layers of biax. Ideally between caul plates. Get the dowel out and you have holes to bond seaside carbon gudgeons (use plexus for the bushes) how you do the other bits depends a lot on the other decisions you make on your boat. Cheers Dan |
