That's ind of my point. All new classes can be more or less described in terms of older classes. RS have taken common design ideas and made successful strict ODs from them. Some people seem ton think this isn't creative.

The buzz and 3000 were actually still in production when the RS500 came out .. just not by their original builders. The 3000 still is (in theory!). Arrival of the RS version with its marketing hootch effectively squashed / diluted the others - without really being a better boat,; though to be fair I think it got a few people out of hiking RS200s into a trap boat (whilst allowing them to stay with their favourite brand). RS the Apple of the sailing world!
Dart 16 and Topper Topaz 16 definitely still in production on release of the RS-cat. I do hope RS will use it as a springboard for something special - their take on an F16 perhaps? ... oh just remembered, the K-6. That's a nice boat and quite an original and unique beast. But they stopped making that one! If only we monohull lot could have "box" rules like the cats do for F16s and F18s (or A-classes come to that) we could choose what we wanted to sail AND our favourite manufacturer and still have other people to race against. Is that a bit idealistic? Meanwhile the RS people buy RS boats and go to huge RS events ... Sailfest meanwhile had NO RS boats present except the RS300s. Anyway, nice to get a bit of discussion going!

K6 is still being built by the same builder (Rondar), just marketed directly rather than through the RS machine. A bit like with the b14s- RS marketed them for a wile, sticking their branding on them and shoving the daggerboard into the RS800, but then (and I don't know the whole story) the class moved away again.
RS also have the Elite, which is an oddity within the range.

IIRC the Elite was a commission from a group of keelboat racers who didn't want 'a sportsboat'- bloody lovely boats, I'd love to go sailing in one.

OK OK ... we do have some fairly open development classes with "box" rules don't we (hangs head in shame)...
... just not supported by the big mono-hull manufacturers, who insist on making similar (but not equivalent boats). Nothing new: 3000 = Buzz 4000 = ISO 5000 = Boss Competed each other to a near grave leaving the field open for LDC I recall that Hartleys made a Cherub or two once, but no one seemed to buy them. anyhow ... way off thread.

What are the 505, Osprey, FD etc if not "Similar but equivalent" boats? It's hardly a new phenomenon
