Builder's arse display - is this not bringing the sport of sailing in to disrepute? Depends where the display takes place, I suppose, and whether the cameras are rolling.

Context is all - one man's innocuous pleasantry can be a dreadful insult, or even bullying, for the recipient.

For instance, here in Ireland even the most genteel would use the f-word as almost meaningless punctuation (it has something to do with perpetuating the myth that independent Ireland was a classless society, free of the shackles of English convention!). Some English sailors, and many team racing umpires object to this celebration of our liberation from 800 years of oppression...

Like all good satire, Father Ted is a shrew observation of reality.

Would you believe that Yes Minister is used by French Civil Service College (ENA) to teach English. The young bureaucrats recognise and admire all of Sir Humphrey's stratagems, because they have seen them used.

Of course some things are their own self parody, so satire cannot work - English politics at present being an example. (oops! mustn't get political).

Not sure many English people of any political colour would disagree. Scottish seems even more farfetched.
