Bizarrely, it also won at the Spa 1000km in 1969. The photo shows the third-placed car just after La Source.

We are woefully off topic - However, in those days, Spa was very much a high speed track. Back to boats - there is an analogy with the low drag Le Mans cars as they still needed aero balance, that is, equal loadings front & rear. They used high aspect ratio narrow chord low drag aerofoil section to trim the car. Where the original 917 went wrong was the basic body shape created horrific rear end lift at very speed.
so similar to using a foiling rudder?
