now there's a thought Alex! (nope, I'm no ringer... besides you lot might actually know what you're doing these days and I'd get horrendously embarrassed.)
If there's a break and someone doesn't mind, I'll go for a quick spin in return for a pint!

I think that a)hp boats, esp singlehanders are by default going to do better on wl courses B) wl courses are an artifice that is tenable during circuit racing but not realistic in the more real world all rou nd arena of club racing courses. Thing is, you are always going to be asking a lot of a singlehander by adding a kite, not just in faff when turning corners. I imagine that an rs100 regatta is a hike off upwind, and because the kite is a decent size, it's a hike off downwind in >12kts. Don't get me wrong, if I had to VMG run in any boat on PY between 7 and 14 kts it would be the 100, but it is a bit of a specialism. When you lose the trapezing horsepower and necessary balletics in manoeuvres, you get thigh burning torture instead. I just think that a kite on a singlehander that has to sail on all points of sail (I.e not in a rarefied circuit environment) is a mistake. As for the punk boat, it was always a beach boat conceptually, so a kite was never on the menu. Launch off the beach for some free sailing and you will get the same speeds by going kiteless and heating it up 20deg. Plus, sailing a una downwind is really engaging and rewarding - doing it well, particularly in Waves, is a real art and if done well, gains loads on a race course. I wanted to keep that art. Seems to me with trapezing assys everyone is the same speed, it is who doesn't f**k up the gybes and drops and lays. Or in the 100s who has some gas left in the legs after the upwinds. Then there is the cost / complexity. By the time you have added a kite, kite sheets, halyards, sheet blocks, halyard blocks, a pole, pole launching mechanism, adaptations to the deck to accommodate this ( and in the case of the 100, spreaders and shrouds to allay the concerns of the masses regarding the look of the mast with the kite up) then you are adding over a grand a boat really, and another 10 mins between trailer and water, and more stuff to get clogged up with sand. |

Dan- thanks for taking the trouble to reply in such a detailed, but digestible manner.
I've spent a long time looking for a club hiker with a kite and whilst the above posts is whole can of reality-checking CS gas directly into the eyes, I think it might well be the catharsis needed to get some clarity in the longer term! cheers fella
