From everything that you have said Jimbo it's time to realise that dinghy sailing is never going to work for you and you would be better off with your hot and your board and sail when you want to for fun. There just isn't a boat out there for you that does everything you want it to. The closest is the solo and you can't quite bring yourself to do it so give up on dinghies

@RB- fair point, although if 10-12 RS300 sailed by a broad spectrum of abilities, weights, ages and backgrounds on round-the-cans, inland midland conditions couldn't / didn't want to / were prevented from / hadn't thought about / cba2 switch from the handicap fleet, what hope has one bloke of modest ability got with something else? IMO we couldn't get a 'better' singlehander for the current club structure, except maybe the Phantom, but then you've got entry pricing issues for competitive boats.
I'm still hoping that the 300 has a bit of a renaissance over the summer, so that in the autumn the committee will discuss with the fleet giving some independent status. However I've got a strong suspicion this won't happen... too many splinters in the fleet's collective arse, rather than a reluctant committee. (They're actively trying to build a 200 fleet for example) The other option is a combined MPS/700 fleet- same effing handicap anyway, (that's how long it took for the RYA to correct it) so they might as well join forces and fleet race- even if it's RTC. @Dave just a bit too far, 1.5 hours, but believe me, it's been considered along with Datchet & Farmoor in the recent past! @Maxi no chance, I won't quit completely- the purpose of this is to get some ideas from other places/people about what works and what doesn't with regards fleet racing. I absolutely will go for a Solo if nothing materialises, or potential change locations- but this would be shame now the A46 cuts 25 minutes off the journey to the club- <30 minutes usually and an optional back road home via the stables/inlaws if we've got some pro-bono childcare sorted. Having a new baby at home this summer means I don't need to rush in to anything this season immediately- solos aren't going anywhere and if anything, waiting a season for the epoxy boats to come onstream would be sensible. On the basis it could take a while lobbying, forming discussion and discovering of new people (iirc 80% of DWSC members don't regularly race), then I might as well use this period to see if there's any support for something else.

Hi
If you want to build up a fleet try buying a Phantom which as we all get heavier in general with age could attract the over size hacked off laser sailors of which a lot of the Phantom fleet comprises. On inland waters I am led to believe the Phantom can be quite useful on handicap! (some people resort to dubious tactics to stop them). Give it a go and they are a very nice boat to sail and in a blow I have great fun blasting over all sorts of boats on a reach. Good luck with your quest, just remember not all Saga sailors are ancient Charlie Cumbley and Matt Howard are both younger than me, and a lot better to say the least. Regards Gordon Gordon |

Hi Gordon,
I agree- good boat for the location, courses and conditions, but I'm not prepared to spend several seasons mincing around handicap racing, I'd choose the Solo first. Here's my Phantom from when we had three at the club looking to build numbers, a further 2 have since come along, but we lost the original 3... not sure on the current 2012 status. All the other sailors were in 300s, MPSs, 700s, Supernovas etc. there's a critical mass issue, too much choice maybe??? The one class that did show some promise was the 300- if I were prepared to handicap race then this would probably be a better basis to work on. But the truth is I can't be arsed with that, imo the opportunity passed, so it looks like I'll wait and get a Solo... unless there's any magic trick?

Shame their 70ft round the world boats are so flaky too - delaminating and such forth left right and centre

I found this article which is about all the help and advice left I could possibly think to give to anyone who would consider a Slowlo over a phantom, why don't you go down to Burfield tomorrow with a secret squirrel cam and find out what the hobbits are up to...

I'm tempted, but there's supposedly enough breeze to actually go sailing at Draycote tomorrow and there just happens to be an RS100 open to watch while I'm out there. It's been a while since I've had the opportunity to take the piss out of Clive's tinted spectacles, I'll buy him a coffee and humour him about buying his racing book.... I'll probably need it for a proper fleet of Solo sailing next season, but I certainly won't need it to 'come on and do the conga' in a handicap fleet.
Clive- bring a copy with you and we can save the postage... Edited by rogue - 30 Mar 12 at 3:48pm |

@Jimbo: sorry, mate. Missing Draycote - combo of flat forecast and need to visit mother in Cornwall. May end up pushing car back home tho. How fast does an estate car go fitted with an RS100 rig? A 400 setup did not work that well on James May's Triumph Herald...
@r2d2: oh yes, sure did. Fingers crossed it holds out for them, they are a long way from anywhere or any other boat. Only 2 from 6 not disclosing worrying/material damage. What's the odds it comes out later that those 2 have 'issues' too?
