So just exactly how much does a Laser 2000 weigh?
Laser themselves used to publish a hull weight of 100kg until several years ago when it suddenly shot up to 140kg (165kg complete boat)! How did this happen? Does this mean earlier boats are 40kg lighter than new ones in a one design class? Were laser just telling fibs at 100kg? If it is 140kg that would make it heavier than an RS Vision or a Wanderer. Are they really that heavy? Maybe you have one and have weighed it on a weighbridge. So we need to know: How heavy are they in reality? Are they all the same regardless of age? Look forward to your more knowledgeable replies. |

Sadly, yes it's likely to be about 140kg if its all up weigh is 165kg. When looking for a modern and lighter boat than a Wayfarer in the Y&Y Racing Classes guide, I identified the L2000 as the most suitable until I noticed its heavy weight and lack of sail area. That was some eight or nine years ago when I assume they were publishing a figure in that order. Thus, with no other modern, large and comfortable fast dinghies which two could easily pull up a ramp, the AltO was born. The hull weight is 82Kg and all up sailing weight 115kg. You should try one! |

we had a training day using two L2000s, an RS Vision and a Bahia. Of the three boats the L2000s were without doubt the lightest, and the nicest to sail.
I own a kestrel which weighs 140kg or more, the L2k weighs nowhere near that much. I used to own an older L2k, I wouldn't say it weighed anymore than the newer ones we sailed today. |

A back breaker on a shingle beech, a trolley with modified wider wheels makes it easier. Someone at our club even uses a quad bike to pull it up and down although I think our exec com has now knocked that on the head because of safety.
Talking of trolleys: The boat designers/manufactiurers put all sorts of efforts into making a boat a pleasure to sail.......what about the bloody trolleys?

From what a good freind of mine told me the older 2000 hulls are lighter by anything up to 25 kgs and they seem stiffer than the latest ones also the top guys try to get hold of the early masts again they are better than the latest ones .So much for being a one design but hey its a laser so what do you expect

This reply from Rockhopper is very interesting and would explain the apparent change in the specification for the hull weight from Laser themselves. I can only assume that, once the class is established, the manufacturer looks for ever cheaper ways and places to build the hulls and heavier is usually simpler and cheaper! If there are discrepancies in L2K hull weights in that order then the one design status is essentially useless. What I still do not understand is that there are numerous posts on this site stating that an RS Vision is way heavier than an L2K but the manufacturers own figures say it is the other way round. Someone must be telling fibs. If I had one I would take it to my local weighbridge to find out.

So if I wanted to start L2K sailing, I need an early boat (light) with a black mast. Great, sounds a lot cheaper than a new one! |

Yes and buy new sails still cheaper than a new boat as for the weight thing my mate weighed his new boat (21500 ish)against an old one(2100 ish) and thats how he found out and then sold the new one and bought the old one and got new sails for it
