Just at to clear up a rumour about not being able to right solid winged boat before it gets around.
They are harder to right if the wind is blowing on the bottom of the wing but easier to right if the wind is blowing onto the top of the wing. If it is 20 knots you just have to make sure to right the boat the easy way in which is will be easier than an open winged boat. They are harder to right in no wind due to the buoyancy of the wings but still a 110kg crew could right the 49er FX in no wind. You simply have to learn not to right the boat the hard way! If its windy its often faster to turtle the boat and bring it up the easy way.

My view of the Cherub is that it is just too short.
Or at least shorter than you would sensibly choose with a blank sheet of paper. For a twin wire high power boat, their PY is not stunning, although they are something else in the right conditions. |

skiifman... IIRC from a previous discussion thread you saw the Aura sailed on its very first launch, and have not actually sailed it , so how can you comment?
the FX is way too heavy for light weights to upright... this has been found as a problem on the water. Also it gets overpowered in bigger breeze having said that the sailors will be ignored and a purely political decision will be made... The multihull options is crazy - why restrict it sooo much??- we could have had solid wing mini AC cats - fast, state of the art and spectacular... opps forgot ISAF are still awaiting getting into the 20th century

I have sailed the aura when it was down in lyme a few weeks after its first launch, but I was pretty sure that some where on here I wrote up what my initial thoughts were on it. When I sailed it the breeze ranged from 5 up to 15 knots, I sailed it with another guy (all up 140kg) helming and crewing, then with a girl helming (all up 125kg) and finally with a girl crewing (all up weight 115kg).
Alain my crew sailed the FX with the same girls. I may be wrong about righting the boat but most of it is down to technique and I have been informed that the FX can be righted by 110kg in no wind which is the hardest! I guess we will just have to wait and see what they do, the last time they had skiff trials the best boat won, lets hope the same happens this time.

SSolo,
I think you will find that most people on this forum haven't sailed any of the potential women's skiffs. Certainly if anybody on here is in a position to comment it would be Skiffman, given his experience. Cheers PHS

... and being one of the principal contractors for London 2012 means that providing a bit of equipment for just one class within the rather quant yachting regatta won't exactly stretch their resources either.

Hmm then that might be cos we're not wimmen anyway, but we do sail stuff, have a keen interest, are consumers, or parents of future users, which likely brings a more educated opinion than that which will be bought to bear by the selectors. It's been my sad experience over the years, that leave an elitist sport to be governed and run by the elite and that's all you'll end up with as a user base, commercially they'd be better placed listening to the views expressed on this forum, then maybe there won't be tumbleweed rolling down the ailes of boat shows.

Done it with 85kg, ie just myself on a few occasions. Reckon it's some propaganda being circulated to convince people a narrower winged boat is better.... Or maybe I'm just super human.

Wouldn't it be nice if it were a box rule boat to be made by a range of manufacturers around the world .. instead of yet another one design with the ongoing rip off of one supplier spares.
... though thinking about it, neither the Finn nor the 420 are exactly value for money! I voted Rebel, 'cause Hartleys are nice people and their excellent shop is a short walk from my house! 29erXX and Mackay are 9er bodges. Aura looks great, but how WILL they make them - wonder where the deck / hull joint is. Cherub and OD should not appear in the same sentence. RS900 hmm, doesn't the world (the UK anyway) have ENOUGH RS boats?

Sorry if I was mis-interpreted. I was Just replying to SSlow comment of 'How can you comment if you havent sailed it'. Perhaps I should have said, most people on this forum haven't sailed it, but are still in a position to comment. |
