Ive got Adobe Premier Pro CS4 and its a very good program, but you need a powerful computer to be able to use it. Ive got 4GB RAM and it still crashes every time I do even the simplest thing.
I just get my friend to do my editing now as he has one of the new Macs with Final Cut, iMovie and 12GB RAM to run it with. Apple is much better than windows!

just thought, there is a very good free editor called Lightworks which is top drawer pro stuff if you can work out how to use it, and as I said it is free. It recommends that you have 4gb ram but I have had it running on 2gb. I normally use ubuntu which is why I forgot about it.
Salty, a 12gb Mac system probably is going to be better than a 4gb windows system for video editting, but factoring in the price of that sort of Mac along with final cut is going to be in the thousands, kinda out of reach for most people. Doesn't make it better if you can't afford to use it. |

I suspect your problem lies elsewhere. I've used Adobe CS5 on my laptop with 4GB RAM without problems. The Mac vs Windows argument is misleading. Editing programmes designed to run on Windows platform (eg Grass Valley Edius, CS5) work just as well as FCP on a Mac. I've worked with most NLEs and they all largely do the same thing and they all have their quirks. You just get used to working on one particular system. I hear that Apple's new generation of FCP is squarely aimed at a more consumer market so if you are thinking of spending some money (and you are a Mac user), it may be worth waiting to see what arrives on Blighty's shores later this year. PS I use Edius all the time now because it really does live up to their claim to 'edit anything' including GoPro files. |

now I've got to my computer and able to look things up, Lightworks in in beta stage but is reasonably stable as far as I can tell. You need to register to download it. The grabs of the gui seem to show something comparable to the other stuff mentioned and theres no reason why it shouldn't be brilliant if the website claims are proved to be true. It says that the pro version has been used on hollywood films so the suggestion is that there is plenty enough features for everyone. Although its windows at the moment they are apparently working on a mac and linux version.
I'd just like to say at this point I don't work for them nor have I used it extensively but it does appear to be very powerful for open source software meaning that you don't need to spend a fortune to use good software

I'm sure you can rs600676, but you need an i-thing or a Mac, and they are expensive and therefore not free which was part of the original op if possible. I wish I had one as the results of the work you put in on your vid of the 600 are great

On a student budget I can't really afford anything above about £10! I have tried video pad which seems to work well, what do people think?
