Another benefit gig for the development classes ... PY just can't copy with the diversity of performance of development classes ... the best is way better than the average ...

The Moth's were amazing. My crew, who has only been sailing since November, was awestruck. He was convinced they should be in the Olympics.
But I do agree with your point about development classes and PY. Edited by Peaky - 07 Jan 12 at 9:36pm |

Jason Belben was in the Olympics (Seoul 1998) I have to say I was very impressed by him sailing a foiling moth in the battle of the classes a few years ago - ExCeL docklands is not the place to sail a foiling moth, but all credit to him for having a go. A worthy winner of the BM in my view (irrespective of handicaps). |

The Moths are by no means the only class with rather binary performance, and they aren't all development classes either. Its in the nature of the handicapping beast that pretty much every dog will have its day, but some much more so than others.

They do need to revise the results though as at least 1 boat is listed twice (once with a position and again with a DNC)....
Sounds like a great day was had by all and 304 (or 303) is an impressive turnout even if 50 or so of them did not start.

Probably opening a can of worms here... but isnt it just proof that average performance isnt a fair way of calculating a handicap and that we should be looking at the fastest boats/sailors to establish a fair handicap for a class!

Alternatively the view could be taken that if you want to win class racing in a development class then you develop an overall package which can wind in light winds, medium winds and strong winds or you don't get the prizes that you are really after as (as we all know) handicap racing is the thing that you do when you can't do the proper thing of class racing.
The one designs are essentially stuck and will have a handicap which favours certain conditions. They will do well in these conditions and the handicap that they get under PY will then reflect this. The desire of the development class sailor is to continue to improve the boats all round performance. This means that it should never be weak on PY compared to the rest of the population. Moths are different - although even their recent development continues to be around foiling in lower wind speeds and better control and ease of sailing in stronger winds. |
