I thought that this looked a lonely forum so I ask how do people get in to match racing at a youth level?

I got into it at university, some clubs such as Royal Thames and Royal Southern have MR development programs I think but it is very very limited.

Rubbish - it's super easy.
  • 2 boats of the same - run what you brung it doesn't matter much,
  • 3 buoys and you're away. Setup a short startline and a windward mark (100m upwind will do for starters in a dinghy, bit longer for keelboats) set the course as upwind, downwind thru finish. 3-2-1 go and you're done
  • Don't need start/finish boat, don't need an umpire. just get on a give it a whirl.
You'll be amazed about what you learn about boat handling, manoeuvring in a very short space of time. Rules disputes - remember / jot down in a notepad and go through them afterwards with the call book and you should be able to nail some/most of them down

For a year at uni - a mate and I was always 'first to the lake' on a wednesday and we'd go out with our crews and spend 20/30 minutes doing the above. Funnily enough when we got onto the team practice later, we'd always be the sharpest for the next 30 mins or so...

Agreed, on occasion we do it to train teams of newcomers, two boats, four teams, they rotate, alternately racing, running start sequence and the race and rescue boat training, great fun.

There may still be spaces at the last winter match race in Portland, a weekend specifically aimed at less experienced match racers.

For juniors West Kirby run a brilliant random pairs team racing each year, only for Optimists but each helm gets 20 or more races in the day
