It wast your post I was talking about. But anyway, I generally support the idea of burning old wooden boats and fondly remember doing just that at Minnis Bay many years ago. One of the members at the time worked for a firework company, so it was always a good night.

OK Peaky you're excused and awarded a golden flame star for services rendered, along with the anonymous consignee of the Osprey to the place best suited to Ospreys.
One day there will be a hall of flame and your services will be truly recognised...

""We'll burn them on the beaches....."" now theres an idea. On another note. The varioius discussions around these parts about disposing of old wooden boats have led to wondering what we will do with the plastic ones when they reach the end of their usefull lives. Incidentally the organisers of the bonfire will not take anything for the fire that might cause toxic smoke. In times past with tyres and sofas and the like, there was some fairly thick smoke produced that could stop a motorway. Saturday's affair was very 21st century PC. They scratched their heads for a while about the yacht varnish. I neglected to tell them it was two pot! |

How will we get rid of failed-class GRP boats (Alto?) in ten years time?
I'm hoping the 400 will end its days racing and become a minor artificial reef.... |

gonna need a hotter bonfire! the resins will burn off pretty cleanly if they can be taken to 600°C or more withgout hanging about in between, and carbon will burn off at that tempearture too. It'll be all the chopped strand glass that'll be the nightmare...

The investigation will determine the cause of this terrible accident, I was not aware the Rugby Club had no bonfire, the smoke from the fireworks should have cleared (even in the lightest breeze firework smoke generally disperses in a couple of minutes), plus the road and the club look like they are on the same level so most of the firework smoke would be above the road (I could be wrong, only going on the aerial shots i ahve seen on the news sites).
Anyway to come back to Jims comment about driving (and parking) appropriately. We went to visit some friends on Saturday who (conveniently) live opposite where a massive display is held every year. A few minutes before we all wondered out into their fron garden to watch and were amazed at the number of idiots who decided to stop, with their hazards on, in the middle of the road so they could watch the display. The road was coned with police 'no waiting' cones to keep it clear for emergency services should they be required. These people didn't care, even when other vehicles drove dwn the road wanting to get through they would not move initially, then when they did they drove on the path which was packed full of people watching the display.
Anyway rant over...the fireworks were great!

We wondered what to do with several abandoned GRP boats last year. Someone burned a Minisail, and the smoke/glass fibres were terrible, so we took another one to the local Council waste disposal site. They wanted £60 per boat as it wasn't domestic waste. So we still have them cluttering up the dinghy park...

wear some protective gear, get a chainsaw/angle grinder, and cut 'em up into small bits, then chuck them in the tip |

Apart from the fact that it sends my dog into aperplexy I'm not really into celebrating the death of someone, no matter what they were planning on doing.
