The Olympic committee have limited the number of competitors taking part in the sailing, so if you allow more than 1 from a country, you are effectively stopping another country from taking part.

But shouldn't the Olympics be about the worlds best? If the two best competitors happen to be from the same country, so be it. Jamaica is odds on to get gold and silver in the mens 100m.

Actually, that's got me thinking. How about a relay? Laser, Finn, 470 and 49er - one lap each, any order. Girls equivalent too, obviously.

They've brought in "one per country per event" for track cycling, which is causing several nations (not just UK & NI) severe problems with selection. Just imagine if they did the same for athletics and swimming!

But these sports can run heats very easily to deal with more competitors. To get a medal for the 100m only requires a minute or two's running in the whole games. |

Maybe they should use 8 supplied Lasers, which get used by competitors in heats. One race, top 4 go through to the next round. 8 heats would give you 64 sailors, down to 32, 16, and 8 for a final medal race.
As you only need 8 boats of each class, plus a spare or 2, costs would be way down. Not really any less fair than the current model, and far easier to understand, as it is the same as sprinting, tennis etc. If you ain't good enough, you get one race, just like in other sports. At least it lasts an hour or more, not 11 seconds. |

Some sports that have a 'knockout' style format of heats (cycle track sprinting/keiren, rowing), have a 'reperchage' which is like a second chance for the losers to advance to the next round. Of course they have to work that much harder in that they have to do extra heat(s), and then they are often seeded against the fastest in the next round... not perfect but as fair as could possibly be?
The womens match racing will be run as a knockout, won't it? Or at least at the medal stages.

I think heats are good for when you have to be the fastest or it is a one on one sport such as boxing or football. But sailing is a combination of speed, boat handling, metereology and tactics.
