Match race starts at 2:17 ish. Seems to me that the acceleration of these beasts, combined with the potential loss of speed in manoeuvres from poor boat handling, will make for more lead changes.

Or one long drag race to layline, followed by one tack and a drag race to the mark...although boats with similar performance should improve the spectacle compared to the last AC.

Maybe worth giving it a chance before commenting. The boundry lines on the course mean that just isnt an option. |

I surprised myself by really enjoying the fleet racing and to be honest the match racing wasn't bad until the kiwi's gapped oracle on the penultimate run. How much of this was down to the format and how much the patchy and shifty conditions creating a lot of snakes and ladders situations I'm not sure...

I am a fan of these cats and their wing masts, but not as match racers.

I found the race on the clip moderately interesting, but not exciting (which is a shame given the resources spent), and no more interesting than any other sailing race (I would rather watch a good team race, or a match race in monohulls). Suspect that the one-on-one match races between these cats will be less interesting than the fleet races

Well I think its good... not great but good none the less.
Easily the most interesting AC sailing Ive seen in a long time. So its not match racing in the classic sense of the word but its still match racing. Tacking is slow so they have to minimise manoeuvres yet still place at least a loose cover and there are now so many passing opportunities down wind you can never give up. I wouldn't have picked Cats for the event but I reckon there making a pretty good go of it. O and the TV coverage is actually pretty good, although you have to miss the highlights and watch the whole race to appreciate it. Ian |
