We've very much appreciated the interest on this forum from August last year (http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7004&title=xi-dinghy) in our X1 project which has now become the new "X1 Riverboat", and we're looking forward to coming along to the Dinghy Show next month with the production version.
As well as the brief taster in this months Y & Y we finally have a website up and running at http://www.x1riverboat.co.uk/ We mentioned some while back that we'd let you guys know as soon as it's done. I know there are a lot of skiff sailors here, and this boat will clearly not be of much interest to them in that it's heading in a completely different design direction. This boat is for those who sail predominantly on rivers, estuaries, and small and medium sized inland lakes and reservoirs, who we think have been a bit neglected (!) but for whom we are hopeful this design could now liven things up considerably. Like the concept behind the boat (I grew up sailing on a river, and agree, most modern boat just don't do that well) like the look of the boat (though it is bigger than I would want, being a shortarse) but hate the name, I'm afraid. You call it a Riverboat, but then immediately say "but it isn't just for rivers". Like the website, too.

Looks rather plasticy when compared to a vintage Merlin with a tall rig. I bet those cheap (to you) far east sails won't last 5 minutes either. Still it's a good way of f***ng your customers on a regular basis.

I like the concept. I sail on small sausage shaped lake, it would be great for us but we have a minimum PY which is equivalent to a Merlin so sadly it is too fast. Good luck with it, its nice to see a new boat that is designed for displacement sailing.

I was one of those that was interested when the concept was first aired.
Having now seen the web site it looks great and ticks a lot boxes for me for a double hander. I wasn't intending going to the dinghy show but I may well do now. Just the small matter of funds to address though..... |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

I can't help thinking that to market it as a "River boat" and then stick a kite on it is a bit of an own goal.
I sail on a very restricted water crying out for a simpler alternative to N12s and a modern alternative to Ents which do predominantly well but for us a spinnaker is just the kiss of death. I wish you well but I can't see it working on our water unless the boat can be given a PY for non spinnaker use. I am sure Peaky will be along in a moment to suggest a viable alternative |

That's easy enough: all you need to do is to get your club(s) to allocate a trial number without a kite and report it to the RYA... Any boat can be given a number for non spinnaker use.
That was a bit unnecessary wasn't it? Edited by JimC - 11 Feb 11 at 2:28pm |

can only agree with the moo.
looks a good boat, and am sure it will sail well on mid size inland lakes, but calling it a 'riverboat ' seems to be a own goal. and at most clubs, once you start trying to get people to agree on trail py numbers, you open a large can of worms! Edited by ex laser - 11 Feb 11 at 2:41pm |

I am happy to see the kite on it, although I rarely sail on rivers these days.
Flying a kite on a river will make downwind legs a lot more fun, raise the status of the crew and teach you lots about flying kites in light weather. When you are sailing on current in an evening light wind race, good kite work makes a huge difference and is very rewarding. Seems that not having a kite is quite complex these days, with complex jibstick affairs. Not sure about the open transom, our river had a very steep slip and it's nice to keep the boat dry when launching. |
